March 23, 2006 Week Three, Day Three
Jan Nichols reports that cabinets in the kitchen and baths are being installed. Final touches are being made on drywall. Prime paint is being applied in the kitchen. Room doors are being installed. Cooking "Suthern" at the Mississippi ShoreGreetings from beautiful D'Iberville, Miss. midst the pink azaleas. Some 31 folks from the Sheridan, South Whitley, Rich Valley, Forest, Old Bethel, Meridian Street, Irvington, Castleton, St. Luke's (Indy), and Acton ,Ind. and Whitehouse, Cross Plains, and Adams, Tenn. UMC congregations are lining with 45 new friends from the Raleigh District, N.C. for what seems like miles for our fantastic food. We serve sweet tea with each meal. We have cookie queens and dish washing darlings. We work from morning 'til evening and the rewards are myriad. We are making new friends, learning recipes and garnishes including a new superb gumbo made by a member of Heritage UMC our hosts. We have doubled our recipes in order to serve the crowd and stood wondering if the food would stretch. It does! Our "girls in green" from Raleigh have been with us through thick and thin and sleep in the sanctuary while we retire to the Sunday school classrooms each night, very tired yet satisfied that we have fed them well.
Meanwhile, out in the Volunteer Center cabinets are being hung in the bathrooms and kitchen areas. Three men from Old Bethel were holding up the cabinets with their heads yesterday. Hopefully that won't happen too often. Doors and frames will be fitted by the end of the week. By tomorrow, 80 percent of the drywall should be ready for painting. Pete Burks and John Street are keeping us mighty busy. The spirit in this place is phenomenal. People walk in each day asking for a "new roof for Grandma's house, day care children listening to "blues" while napping share the room with adults breaking for lunch. A woman from the church comes at night to give hand massages. On Sundays, the sanctuary is shared by Roman Catholics, Baptists and United Methodists plus the community adjusts to the loss of its facilities. Beautiful banners decorate the walls of the sanctuary and mattresses, and sleeping bags and suitcases line the walls. God is as work. Thanks be to God.
Editors note: The funds continue to flow in for this project. The Indiana Area Foundation has received to date $76,264. The project needs $123,736 to be completed. Thank you for your generous contributions. DRG Last updated on March 20, 2008 |
