United Methodists gather for conference at I.U.

Approximately 1,800 clergy and lay members representing the 705 United Methodist congregations of South Indiana Annual (regional) Conference will gather in Bloomington June 6 - 8. Their meeting place will be the Auditorium at Indiana University where they will worship, celebrate ordinations of new clergy and conduct church-related business.

During the three-day session, members will review programming reports; and plans for ministries for the next 12 months will be refined and approved, along with a proposed $10.6 million budget. The Annual Conference budget, funded by local United Methodist churches of South Indiana, supports overseas missions, ministries of the conference, local-church building and support programs and administrative costs. In addition, the annual budget provides support for the Church's benevolent agencies in Indiana which include three children's homes, four camps/conference centers, three universities, five hospitals and six retirement homes.

Featured guest preacher this year will be Bishop Charles Wesley Jordan, ret., who will speak at 8 p.m. Thursday, June 6 and Friday, June 7 in the IU Auditorium. Prior to his retirement in 2000, Bishop Jordan served as the episcopal leader of the United Methodist Iowa Area churches. For the past two years he has been Bishop in Residence at Claremont School of Theology in Denver, Colo.

Eight new clergy persons will be ordained, and eight more will be commissioned as probationary clergy members Friday evening at 7:30 at IU Auditorium. The 27 retiring pastors of the conference this year represent a total of 659 years of pastoral ministry.

Key dates and times:

  • Memorial Service: 11:15 a.m. Thursday in the IU Auditorium, the Rev. George Davis, senior pastor of St. Mark's UMC in Carmel, Ind. is preaching

  • Bishop John Wesley Jordan, will speak at 8 p.m. Thursday, June 6 in the IU Auditorium.

  • Service of Ordination: 7:30 p.m. in the IU Auditorium, Indiana Bishop Woodie W. White preaching.

NOTE: The South Indiana Conference held a ground breaking ceremony for a new Office Headquarters on May 10. The new property is located on the southwest side of Bloomington near the intersections of State Roads 45 and 37, just north of Liberty Drive. Construction is set to begin in early June.
