Rev. Ida Easley, 800/919-8167 or 765/938-1556; First black superintendent appointed to Rushville church districtThe Rev. Ida Easley has been appointed by Indiana Bishop Woodie W. White as the new district superintendent for the Rushville District of the United Methodist Church. She replaces the Rev. Robert Sharp who now serves as director of the Church's South Indiana Annual (regional) Conference, based in Bloomington, Ind. A native of Indianapolis, Easley is the first African-American woman to be appointed to the United Methodist superintendency in the South Indiana Conference. Her 17 years of ministry have been filled, she says, with the joy of baptizing, confirming and establishing relationships in the parishes and communities she has served. She has also been a part of the formation of several Emmaus (spiritual study) communities, and was elected to serve as a delegate to the denomination's 2000 General Conference in Cleveland, OH, as well as last year's World Methodist Conference in Bristol, England. Easley graduated in 1984 from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Ill. She began her pastoral ministry in the Rushville District, serving at Connersville Second UMC and Rushville Wesley UMC. In 1989, she moved to Indianapolis Forest Manor UMC and, in 1992, to Petersville UMC. Immediately prior to being named Rushville superintendent, Rev. Easley had been pastor of Nashville First UMC, having served there for the past three years. As superintendent of Rushville District, Easley has oversight over 88 congregations with a combined total of 11,951 members. She also serves as a member of Bishop White's Cabinet. Rushville District covers Decatur, Fayette, Franklin, Henry, Rush, Shelby, Union and Wayne Counties in East Central Indiana. ### PHOTO available on request.
