William Schwein named new church district superintendent

Indiana Bishop W. White has appointed the Rev. William Schwein, Jr. as superintendent for The United Methodist Church's Indianapolis East District which is comprised of 64 churches. Their combined membership total is approximately 21,390. Dr. Schwein follows the Rev. David V.W. Owen who was recently appointed to a newly created staff position of Director of Congregational Development for South Indiana United Methodist churches. Schwein has served as senior pastor at Carmel United Methodist Church since 1995. His new appointment is effective Nov 1.

Previously he has served small as well as large congregations, including churches in Bloomington, Evansville, Rushville, Southport and Indianapolis. He was senior pastor at Meridian St. UMC in Indianapolis for seven years before being appointed to Carmel.

Active in community as well as church-related organizations, Schwein currently serves on the Advisory Council of Buchanan counseling Center in Indianapolis, as trustee of UM-related University of Indianapolis and as a board member of the Methodist Hospital Health Foundation, among others. He also serves as a member of the Partnership Committee for Carmel's Future and the Methodist Council for church-related DePauw University in Greencastle.

William Schwein holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from DePauw University, a Master of Divinity degree from Garrett Evangelical Seminary in Evanston, Ill., and an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from the University of Indianapolis.

Writing credits include a play, This Way to Bethlehem (Abingdon Press), and numerous articles published in Christian Ministry, The Circuit Rider, The Upper Room, Pulpit digest, Clergy Journal; and he writes a regular column in the Hoosier United Methodist News.

Bill and wife Judith Ann Schwein have been married since 1968 and have one son, William Lawton Schwein, 27. The couple will continue to reside in Indianapolis.
