Indiana bishop calls for a time of serious, exhausting prayer

United Methodist Indiana Area Bishop Woodie W. White called today for a time of serious and exhausting prayer as war between Iraq and the United States comes closer to reality. From his office in Indianapolis, Bishop White issued this statement.

Iraqi President Saddam Hussein and our President George W. Bush stand at a pivotal time in history. The world holds its breath as war seems ever so near. Both leaders have had counsel, advice, words of support and opposition.

The United Nations has made one resolution on Iraq. A pending vote on a new resolution seems imminent. The White House has set March 17 as a deadline for Iraq to show it is fully complying with U.N. demands.

Demonstrators across the world have sounded a loud "no" to what appears as an inevitable war.

Religious leaders and ordinary citizens have voiced their views and concerns. There is little more to say that has not already been said to these two world leaders.

President Hussein and President Bush now have the awesome responsibility of making a decision.

Now is the time for serious and exhausting prayer by people of faith, praying that each of these leaders will make decisions moving us from the brink of war, destruction and death.

Now is the time for serious and exhausting prayer for those in the military -- our sons and our daughters, our mothers and our fathers, our sisters and our brothers, who already stand prepared to step into harm's way.

Now is the time for serious and exhausting prayer that nations and their leaders find ways to be in meaningful and serious negotiation in an effort to peacefully resolve conflict and work toward a world of peace and justice.

Join me as I pray for President Hussein and for President Bush.

Join me as I pray for the citizens of both our countries.

Join me as I pray for peace in our world.
