BISHOP NAMES IMAGINE INDIANA TRANSITION TEAM MEMBERS

Bishop Mike Coyner announced July 2 the 14 members of the Imagine Indiana Transition Team. It includes: Al Brothers, NIC layman of Leo; Herb Buwalda, NIC large church pastor of South Bend; Beverly Calender-Anderson, SIC layperson of Bloomington; Jim Coy, SIC layperson of Evansville; Brian Durand, SIC youth minister of Indianapolis; Ida Easley, Rushville DS of Rushville; Bert Kite, SIC clergy of large church of Carmel; Ashley Moreland, NIC young adult of Fort Wayne; Kayc Mykrantz, NIC Lay Leader of Logansport; David V.W. BUILDING HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS TRAINING REQUIRED FOR SOUTH CLERGY

Building Healthy Relationships Training introduced during the clergy session at the South Indiana Annual Conference, is required for pastors in the South Indiana Conference. Training will aid in increasing self-awareness so we can grow to better appreciate our differences and improve relations in and beyond our church walls. There have been inquiries about accessing The Edge Advantage© as well as questions about receiving Continuing Education credit. Everyone must register for the program through the conference center by contacting Sharon White. There is a limit on the size of the classes and we need to monitor how and when people are registered. The conference will only cover cost for those who register through the conference office. Additionally, those who participated in the pilot study DO NOT need to repeat the on-line study, but will need to participate in the workshop. Continuing Education credits (8 hours) will be given only upon completion of both the on-line study and the follow-up workshop. SOUTH CONFERENCE TO REQUIRE PARSONAGE INSPECTION FOR MOLD

During the South Indiana Annual Conference session in Bloomington this past month, an amendment to the Parsonage Policies (SIC Journal pp. 353-354) was approved by the annual conference session to require an inspection by churches of their parsonages for mold. The amendment to the existing policies reads: "That an air-quality test for molds be conducted every other year in each parsonage and the results reported to the Charge Conference; and that if tests show excessive mold contamination, remediation is to start as soon as possible, with the pastoral family located to clean, temporary housing." Reference to this amendment will be included in each SIC church’s charge conference later this year. – e-HUM

CHURCH AGENCY LEADERS CONTINUE WORK ON FOUR AREAS OF FOCUS

In their first meeting since The United Methodist Church's legislative assembly, leaders of the denomination's general agencies continued cementing partnerships and planning their work on Four Areas of Focus. The agencies' top executives, or general secretaries, met June 24-26 in Washington, D.C., two months after the 2008 General Conference affirmed the Areas of Focus as the emphases of the church. The group is fashioning ways to learn from local churches and annual conferences from every corner of the connection, and it is exploring innovative partnerships that will integrate those learnings and share them broadly, said Neil Alexander, chairperson of the General Secretaries Table and president of the United Methodist Publishing House. The agency executives met with Bishop Gregory Palmer, president of the Council of Bishops, and Bishop John Hopkins, president of the Connectional Table, as they began concentrated work in joint planning and action strategies.

The four areas focus on:

  • Combating the diseases of poverty by improving health globally,
  • Creating new places for new people and revitalizing existing congregations,
  • Developing principled Christian leaders for the church and the world and
  • Engaging in ministry with the poor. – UMNS

UNITED METHODIST CHURCH MEMBERS ASKED FOR INPUT ON PAPERWORK

During the next three weeks, United Methodists are invited to share their thoughts on the official paperwork of the church. The Committee on Official Forms and Records, under the denomination’s General Council on Finance and Administration, is for the first time asking for input through an electronic public comment system. The committee is responsible for overseeing the design and content of all official documentation for the worldwide 11.5 million-member denomination.

“Comments and observations will aid the committee in developing more user-friendly forms and bring the collection of data into the 21st century,” said Lisa King, the committee’s chairperson.

The forms include statistical tables, charge conference forms, local church certificate and membership records, ordination and licensing certificates, among others.

GCFA, which coordinates finances and safeguards the legal interests and rights of The United Methodist Church, will e-mail an invitation to the church’s episcopal and annual conference leaders to join in the forum. The survey closes on July 18. To participate, visit www.gcfa.org/ofrsurvey. – UMNS

CLERGY EFFECTIVENESS STUDY WILL ENHANCE TRAINING, SAYS LEADER

An analysis of what makes an effective pastor will enhance training provided this summer to United Methodist annual (regional) conferences. The Rev. Sharon Rubey, director of candidacy and conference relations at the United Methodist Board of Higher Education and Ministry, said the study would provide useful information for those who work with candidates for ministry, assign pastors to churches and do clergy supervision. The next step, according to Rubey, is to develop and distribute a survey about the underlying behaviors associated with effective ministry. – UMNS

MICHIGAN COLLEGE OFFERS SCHOLARSHIPS TO DISABLED VETERANS

United Methodist-related Adrian (Mich.) College is accepting applications for "Operation Education," its newest scholarship program benefiting disabled American veterans for the fall 2008 semester. The program will offer a disabled U.S. veteran, injured during combat in Afghanistan or Iraq, a full scholarship toward a college degree. The scholarship will be given each year and will accompany the student through his or her education at the college until graduation. The college will offer books, housing, meals, a laptop and school supplies, as well as physical and emotional support. The soldier’s spouse or family will also be provided for through the college’s benefits. GAMBLING EXPANSION IS A LOSING BET

In a victory for family advocates, two pro-gambling bills were defeated in the U.S. House of Representatives this past week. The Committee on Financial Services voted down H.R. 5767, which would have legalized Internet gambling. And the full House rejected an expansion of off-reservation gambling, 121-298.

Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., authored H.R. 5767 and is expected to continue to fight the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 that strengthened laws to protect families from dangerous, foreign, illegal Internet gambling operations.

Chad Hills, analyst for gambling research and policy at Focus on the Family Action, said: “Frank's push is to legalize online gambling, promote it and tax it, with little or no regard for its destructive implications on children, families, crime and our nation's stability.”

For now, American families can breathe a sigh of relief.

“Internet gambling is poised as one of the most dangerous, far-reaching threats to American families,” Hills said. “We owe much thanks to the House members who stood firm on pro-family principles and integrity and defended American families in the face of audacious opponents and dangerous policies.” -- Focus on the Family

FLOODED CEDAR RAPIDS CHURCH OFFERS WITNESS IN CRISIS

The congregation of Salem United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, isn't accustomed to being on the receiving end of ministry. Whether feeding the homeless, dispatching mission teams, hosting sports leagues or collecting special offerings, the historic downtown congregation has lived up to its moniker of being a "warm heart in the center of the city" for more than a century.

However, after the floods of 2008 filled its basement and sanctuary June 13, as well as damaging thousands of homes in surrounding working-class neighborhoods of Cedar Rapids, the mission-minded church is learning to be "on the receiving end of the body of Christ," according to the Rev. Linda Bibb, pastor.

Now that the waters have receded, volunteers converge daily near the now-gutted church building to receive cleanup assignments for the church and its residential neighbors, most of whom have no flood insurance. More than 4,000 homes were partially submerged in an area that Bibb calls "the worker bee side of town."

BLOOMINGTON DISTRICT GIVES THANKS FOR FLOOD RELIEF EFFORTS

Since the floodwaters hit in the Bloomington District area, we have been overwhelmed with monetary donation, flood bucket supplies, and volunteers.

The Bloomington District office has received over $8,000 in monetary donations from churches and individuals in the community. The district has received bucket donations from community members and local UMC churches. Completed flood buckets were donated from Wesley Chapel UMC (Lawrence Co.), Batesville UMC, Linton First UMC and Unity Chapel/Wesley Chapel in the New Albany District.

Midwest Distribution Center delivered 200 flood buckets to Worthington, Ind., (Greene Co.) on June 12. District volunteers came to the South Indiana Conference Center to assemble 100 flood buckets on June 16 to be sent to Worthington. On June 25 the district had another volunteer day when another 100 buckets were assembled. The district also received 22 complete buckets from the Presbyterian Church and was able to send 128 flood buckets to Terre Haute, Ind. One hundred health kits and cleaning supplies were sent to Owen County to the Spencer UMC Mission store on June 26. Another truck load of flood buckets and cleaning supplies were sent to Spencer July 1. Bottled water has been distributed in Owen and Morgan counties. We currently have 23 complete flood buckets at the SIC Center for distribution. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED IN WORTHINGTON, TERRE HAUTE, BARTHOLOMEW

Volunteers work teams are needed in the Worthington area. By the week of July 7, they will be working on recovery building. Hosts will provide food and housing. Volunteers will be working in Worthington and possibly doing some work in Elnora. Please contact Allen Haynes at 812-239-9335 for additional information.

Volunteer opportunities are available in the Terre Haute area through Operation Blessing. Please contact Paula or Bernadette at 757-374-0944 to receive scheduling information, location and items to bring.

Beginning July 14 there will be work teams needed for the Bartholomew County area to reconstruct houses damaged by flood waters. At this time there are 70 homes that are drying out in order to have work done on them. These homes are the only that could be worked on at this time. There have been more requests but not enough workers. Volunteer work teams will be scheduled for Thursday, Friday and Saturday beginning July 14. ASBURY CHURCH IN COLUMBUS REPORTS ON FLOOD RELIEF EFFORTS

Immediately after the flood on June 7, members of Asbury UMC in Columbus, Ind., congregated at the Northside Middle School shelter and organized to serve about 400 meals. On Sunday, June 8, they provided about 900 breakfasts, 500 lunches and more than 300 dinners. By Monday, June 9, they activated a work-camp procedure to mobilize flood relief efforts. During the next two weeks, 204 volunteers worked a reported 2,648 hours helping to “muck out,” clean up and tear out 34 houses. That work was largely completed by Friday, June 20.

Since then, Asbury has joined with First UMC in Columbus and North Christian Church to help our client families navigate the bureaucracies and plan their reconstruction work. In this phase of the work, we have recruited about 30 people (both administrators and caseworkers). This combined group is looking after 78 clients that we helped during the earlier cleanup. All this work is being coordinated with the United Way’s Volunteer Action Center. – Asbury UMC, Columbus

NORTH CENTRAL JURISDICTIONAL CONFERENCE NEWS, ANNOUNCEMENTS

The North Central Jurisdictional Conference is scheduled to meet July 15-19 at Grand Rapids, Mich. At least one bishop will be elected during this conference. CONTEMPORARY WORSHIP LEADER SOUGHT

Central United Methodist Church in Richmond, Ind., seeks to employ a Christian music leader/worship leader for a weekly Sunday morning, participatory, contemporary service. This person would be responsible for planning, organizing, and leading contemporary music teams. Tasks would include meeting as a participant with others in the planning group for each service, developing the music for each service, supervising and rehearsing with volunteer musicians, and leading the music team at each service.

Applicant need to be skilled in leading worshipful singing. Experience or training in contemporary worship leadership is desirable. Christian maturity should be evident. Pay is negotiable according to experience.

ANDERSON FIRST UMC SEEKS JR. HIGH, SR. HIGH, COLLEGE DIRECTOR

First United Methodist Church of Anderson is currently seeking a candidate/s for the positions of Junior High Youth Director, Senior High Youth Director and College Director. Each of the positions is part-time but a candidate could fill one or all of the positions. The successful candidate/s have an active, dynamic faith; an ability to relate and communicate faith to youth and the capability to build ministry teams.

Junior High Ministry is focused on grades 7-8 youth. Senior High Ministry is focused on grades 9-12 youth. College Age Ministry is focused on college age young adults.

Each program design is built around the five components of faith development, fellowship, food, fun, and service opportunities. Each program is supported by four adult teams who partner together with the appropriate director to implement the program design. General responsibilities include: provide community, encourage faith walk, maintain regular weekly contact, maintain database of youth, partner in ministry with adult teams, recruit, train and utilize adult leaders.

BROWNSBURG CHURCH SEEKS DIRECTOR OF YOUTH MINISTRIES

Calvary United Methodist Church in Brownsburg, Ind., is a large, growing congregation seeking a full-time Director of Youth Ministries.
