Jesus sent out the twelve apostles with these instructions:
Stay away from the Gentiles and don't go to any Samaritan town. Go only to the people of Israel, because they are like a flock of lost sheep. As you Heal the sick, raise the dead to life, heal people who have leprosy, and force out demons. You received without paying, now give without being paid.

With shouts of joy and prayers of thanksgiving, members of The United Methodist Church's South Indiana and North Indiana annual conferences approved a plan to merge the two regions into one new Indiana Annual Conference.
Bishop Mike Coyner of Indianapolis announced the results of votes by each annual conference during the closing session of the South Indiana legislative gathering June 7 at the Indiana University Auditorium in Bloomington.
South Indiana members voted 616-185 on June 6 to unite with the North Indiana Conference. North Indiana members, meeting May 30 in West Lafayette, voted 730-192 for the merger.
In a June 9 letter to leaders of both conferences, Coyner thanked all who helped in the process. "Thanks to all who have prayed, discussed, disagreed, and worked together to shape the plan to date," he wrote. "There are many 'next steps' to follow, but I sense the strong affirmation of both conferences for us to continue on this journey together. I pray that it will all be to the glory of God and to the ministry of Christ here in Indiana."
Coyner called for a special session of both conferences Oct. 4 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds to finalize amendments, elect committees and begin plans for the first combined Indiana Annual Conference session, scheduled for June 25-28, 2009, at Ball State University in Muncie. – e-HUM
Prior to the 2008 United Methodist General Conference in Fort Worth earlier this spring, the church’s Council of Bishops was authorized to work in cooperation with its ecumenical agency to engage in formal relations with other denominations or ecclesial bodies. The bishops’ ecumenical officer coordinated the relationships.
Delegates to the 2008 General Conference added language to give the bishops authority to enter into “interim and provisional ecumenical agreements” with other Christian bodies, following consultation with and concurrence of the United Methodist Commission on Christian Unity and Interreligious Concerns. However, all agreements of full communion and permanent membership in ecumenical organizations must be ratified by General Conference.
By a General Conference vote, The United Methodist Church entered into full relationship with The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America on April 28. The denomination also has an interim Eucharist-sharing covenant relationship with The Episcopal Church and agreements with five historically black Methodist denominations that make up the Pan-Methodist Commission. – UMNS
The Rev. Ray Buchanan had spent years working to banish hunger in the United States when an experience in Sierra Leone made him re-think his focus. In 1997, during the height of the African country's civil war, he visited with a number of United Methodist pastors in the city of Bo who told him "they wore their clerical collars when they begged in the streets because people would be more generous." Returning home "in a self-righteous fit," Buchanan raised $65,000 in six weeks, enough to provide rice for every pastor's family in Sierra Leone for a year. That experience in Africa helped propel Buchanan to found Stop Hunger Now in 1998. During its 10-year existence, the Raleigh, N.C.-based organization has provided more than $44 million in direct aid to more than 60 countries, including more than 5 million meals for the poor. For 2008, Stop Hunger Now has set a goal to package 5.5 million meals. On Aug. 23, its University Million Meal Event hopes to bring together 4,000 volunteers from nine colleges and universities to assemble 1 million meals in one day. "We have a vision of ending hunger in our lifetime," said Buchanan. – UMNS
The United Methodist Committee on Relief is providing humanitarian assistance in politically charged Zimbabwe. UMCOR responded on June 4 to a request for aid and will assist a partner organization working on the ground in distributing food and medicine to communities and clinics serving the most vulnerable. Because of the high cost of fuel, UMCOR will help pay to transport the goods to areas most affected by food shortages and politically related violence. The agency also is working with Bishop Ivan Abraham and the Methodist Church in Southern Africa to help provide shelter and food in the Johannesburg area for refugees there, many of them from Zimbabwe. UMCOR sent a $10,000 emergency grant and may provide a staff member there for several months. – UMNS
United Methodists are celebrating a victory for farm workers following an agreement by Burger King Corp. to pay more for tomatoes picked by workers in Florida.
The second largest fast-food chain in the United States agreed to pay an extra 1.5 cents per pound for tomatoes picked in Florida. One penny of the increase will go for wages, and a half cent will fund incremental payroll taxes and administrative costs to encourage grower participation in the pact.
The May 23 agreement with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers roughly doubles the earnings of the Florida workers. It also offers protection to farm workers who have been subjected to abuse from growers, according to Brigitte Gynther, Interfaith Action of Southwest Florida.
United Methodists in Florida have worked with both the coalition and Interfaith Action to bring about change for farm workers laboring in harsh conditions for as little as $50 a day. The coalition already has similar agreements with McDonald's Corp. and Taco Bell owner Yum Brands Inc. The United Methodist Church supported a boycott against Taco Bell that ended in March 2005 when the fast-food chain agreed to the one-cent increase. – UMNS
Black and white anti-torture banners are being displayed next to the familiar cross and flame on the front of some United Methodist churches during the month of June. More than 300 faith groups in all 50 U.S. states are displaying the banners in support of the National Religious Campaign Against Torture's "Banners Across America" campaign. In a press conference on June 5, religious leaders representing diverse congregations launched the campaign to mobilize faith communities against U.S.-sponsored torture. The campaign is timed to offer an interfaith public witness during Torture Awareness Month, said the Rev. Richard Killmer, campaign director. As of June 5, twenty-one United Methodist churches, along with the United Methodist Board of Church and Society in Washington, were displaying banners with the words "torture is wrong" or "torture is a moral issue." – UMNS
In mid-July, United Methodists in the United States will gather in five jurisdictional (regional) meetings to elect new bishops and assign bishops to episcopal areas. United Methodist Communications will provide ongoing coverage of the episcopal elections at www.UMC.org. United Methodist News Service and the Web Ministry Team will work with church communicators in each of the five jurisdictions to provide up-to-the-moment ballot results as the episcopal elections proceed. UMNS also will post news stories on each new bishop elected, as well as roundup stories on where the bishops in each jurisdiction are assigned to serve for the 2009-2012 quadrennium. The conferences will meet simultaneously July 16-19 in their respective regions, except for the Northeastern Jurisdiction, which meets July 13-18.
The Indiana Area is part of the North Central Jurisdictional Conference that will meet in Grand Rapids, Mich. The two Indiana conferences will be asking the NCJ Conference for permission to be united into one Indiana Conference. Also, the Rev. Frank Beard, Kokomo District Superintendent (NIC), has been endorsed by both Indiana conferences in his calling to run for bishop. The NCJ Conference will elect one bishop. Bishop Sharon Brown Christopher of the Illinois Great Rivers Conference is retiring. – UMNS, e-HUM

Culture changes. Styles change. Meanings change. People change. And hymns change. Every new hymnal that comes out changes the words of hymns from what they were in the previous hymnal. The reasons may be political, theological, cultural, or any of numerous reasons. The changes are greeted by some as good and by others as bad. This article discusses those changes, with a special look at Charles Wesley.
Victory: Overcoming the Trials of Life: "From the moment of birth, to the instant of death, we run the race of life. Too soon the race is over. Too soon the victory won or lost. This series is designed to equip every person to be a caregiver - someone who can shine light in the dark places of the heart: Answers to anger, Stress and burnout; Winning over worry and fear, Trauma and extreme crisis, Death and grief, Marriage in crisis; The crisis of divorce, Basics of care giving, Children in crisis; Transitions of life.
Breaking Free: Making Liberty in Christ a Reality in Life: leads you through a study of the scriptures to discover the transforming power of Christian freedom. Based on Isaiah 61:1-4, this in-depth study draws parallels between the captive Israelites and today's believers. Most Christians today do not fully enjoy the abundant life God intended. God intends for you to: know God and believe Him, glorify God, find satisfaction in God, experience God's peace, enjoy God’s presence.
Wild at Heart: Discovering the Passionate Soul of a Man: God designed men to be dangerous, look at the dreams and desires written in the heart of every boy: To be a hero, to be a warrior, to live a life of adventure and risk. Sadly, most men abandon those dreams and desires aided by a Christianity that feels like nothing more than pressure to be a nice guy. It is no wonder that many men avoid church, and those who go are often passive and bored to death. (UMC.org)—Some say that when it comes to age, 60 is the new 40. If so, it’s a good thing for the aging archaeologist Indiana Jones since his latest adventure in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull really puts him through his paces. With almost twenty years having passed since his last appearance, the big question is whether the elder statesman of action heroes can still thrill audiences with the crack of his whip and the tilt of his battered fedora. Another important question is whether Christians will enjoy another dose of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg’s typical goulash of mysticism and jumbled religiosity. I guess it all depends on how seriously you take it. But since when did we ever take Indiana Jones seriously?
