What Do United Methodist Church Buildings Look Like?

BIBLE PASSAGE FOR SUNDAY

Jesus’ eleven disciples went to a mountain in Galilee, where Jesus had told them to meet him. They saw him and worshiped him, but some of them doubted.

Jesus came to them and said: I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth! Go to the people of all nations and make them my disciples. Baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and teach them to do everything I have told you. I will be with you always, even until the end of the world.

NEWS AND INFORMATION

SEEDS OF HOPE’ PLANTING TIME COMING TO GARY

United Methodists throughout Indiana gathered in Gary, Ind. at the ruin site of Old City First UMC for a “Service of Repentance, Reconciliation, and Appreciation,” this past Oct. 7.

During the service, participants exchanged sack cloth (representing repentance for racism practiced by the church) for a packet of seeds (representing hope for a racism-free United Methodist Church).

Participants were asked to grow the flower seeds in pots and bring the potted plants back to Gary this spring to plant the flowers in designated areas of the former church site. Its planting time, however the ruin site of Old City Church is far from ready for our plants. No progress has been made toward a ruin site garden as outlined by Gary city officials.

Therefore, the following United Methodist Church-related sites have been identified. Please contact the pastor and/or local church for the location that is best for you. Please bring your own garden tools and, yes, purchased potted plants may be used.

Planting will take place on Saturday, June 7 at 10:30 a.m. CT.

UMCOR COOPERATING WITH CWS, ACT ON MYANMAR RELIEF EFFORTS

As aid trickles in to cyclone survivors in Myanmar, United Methodists and other faith-based groups are cooperating on relief efforts. The United Methodist Committee on Relief is working with partners in the Action by Churches Together network, including Church World Service. Local partners have distributed water purification tablets, food and materials for shelter reconstruction, according to the Rev. Sam Dixon, UMCOR's top executive.

ACT has established a rapid-support team in Yangon and Bangkok, according to John Nduna, international director. The team is assisting with coordination and communication for ACT members and supporting local organizations. A preliminary response in the coming days aims to assist at least 10,000 families through water, shelter and cash for work programs.

Donations to UMCOR Advance No. 3019674, Myanmar emergency, can be made online at www.givetomission.org. Credit card donations are accepted by phone at 800-554-8583. Or give through your local United Methodist Church. Local church treasurers need to send offerings to the conference treasurer.

UMCOR, CONFERENCES RESPOND TO U.S. STORMS

In an unusually active U.S. tornado and spring storm season, the United Methodist Committee on Relief is working with United Methodist annual conferences that are establishing recovery ministries.

As of May 12, the Missouri Conference had eight separate recoveries under way – from two ice storms, three flood events and three tornado systems. The latest storms affected three counties – Jasper, Berry and Newton – in southwest Missouri. UMCOR has been assisting the conference and is issuing an emergency grant. Additionally, UMCOR consultant Mary Gaudreau will assist with long-term recovery plans.

Tornado damage in Oklahoma was in the northeast part of the state, near the town of Picher. UMCOR is in close communication with the Oklahoma Conference and is issuing an emergency grant to help launch the recovery.

The Rev. Brad Brady, superintendent of the Macon District, South Georgia Conference, reported that damage in his area is widespread over many communities. UMCOR is working with affected annual conferences to meet emergency needs, assess damage and help with the long-term recovery plans.

Donations can be made to Domestic Disaster Response, UMCOR Advance #901670. Checks can be dropped in church offering plates or mailed directly to UMCOR, P.O. Box 9068, New York, NY 10087. Write the Advance number and name on the memo line of the check. Credit card donations can be made by calling 800-554-8583 or online at www.givetomission.org. Or give through your local UMC. Church treasurers need to send disaster response offerings to the conference treasurer.

AMENDMENT WOULD ALLOW VOTING RIGHTS FOR LOCAL PASTORS

The 2008 United Methodist General Conference approved a constitutional amendment giving local pastors, provisional members and associate members voting rights to elect clergy delegates to General Conference and jurisdictional conferences.

In 2005, nearly 15 percent – or 6,660 of the total clergy membership of annual conferences – were full-time or part-time local pastors. Of these, approximately 4,000 local pastors will be able to vote for delegates to the 2012 legislative meetings, should the amendment be approved during the 2009 annual conference sessions. In 2005, there were 2,492 probationary members, now called provisional members, and 2,065 associate and affiliate members.

To go into effect, the amendment must be approved by two-thirds of the aggregate vote of all clergy and lay delegates voting in the 2009 annual conferences, said the Rev. Robert Kohler, a staff member of the United Methodist Board of Higher Education and Ministry.

“Previously, only ordained deacons and elders in full connection could vote on clergy delegates, so this represents a significant change,” Kohler said.

If approved, local pastors would be able to vote for delegates if the local pastors have completed the United Methodist Course of Study or have a master of divinity degree and have served under appointment for two consecutive years immediately preceding an election.

JURISDICTIONAL CONFERENCES WILL ELECT, ASSIGN BISHOPS

With the 2008 United Methodist General Conference now adjourned, denominational attention shifts to July gatherings of jurisdictional conferences at which nine new U.S. bishops are expected to be elected. Like the worldwide legislative meeting held April 23-May 2 in Fort Worth, Texas, jurisdictional conferences meet once every four years. However, while General Conference handles denominational matters across the globe, each jurisdictional gathering covers business related to one of the church's five regional jurisdictions in the United States.

The primary business of jurisdictional conferences is the election and assignment of bishops. Up to 11 spots for new episcopal leaders could be open due to 10 possible retirements and the resignation of Seattle Area Bishop Edward Paup, who has been elected chief executive of the United Methodist Board of Global Ministries.

However, it appears likely that the Northeastern Jurisdiction will elect only two bishops instead of three. And since General Conference extended the retirement age from 66 to 68, at least one of the three bishops now eligible to continue in office has indicated a desire to do so.

The conferences will meet simultaneously July 16-19 in their respective regions, except for the Northeastern Jurisdiction, which meets July 13-18. The locations are: North Central, Grand Rapids, Mich., which includes both Indiana annual conferences; Northeastern, Harrisburg, Pa.; Southeastern, Lake Junaluska, N.C.; South Central, Dallas; and Western, Portland, Ore.

General Conference approved a plan that will result in one less bishop in four of the five U.S. jurisdictions, beginning in 2012.

The North Central Jurisdiction (www.ncj2008.org) with, 276 delegates, expects to elect one bishop to replace retiring Bishop Sharon Brown Christopher, currently Bishop of the Illinois Area (Illinois Great Rivers Conference).

The South Indiana Conference Black Methodists for Church Renewal (BMCR), North Indiana Conference Black Methodists for Church Renewal, the Black United Methodist Pastors (BUMP) of the Indiana Area and the North and South Indiana Cabinets so far have endorsed the Rev. Dr. Frank Beard, Superintendent of the Kokomo District, as an episcopal candidate. Beard is one of nine endorsed candidates. IOWA DELEGATION ENDORSES DISTRICT SUPERINTENDENT FOR BISHOP

The Iowa Annual Conference Delegation to the 2008 General and Jurisdictional Conferences of The United Methodist Church has formally endorsed the Rev. Dr. Wesley S. K. Daniel as a candidate for the episcopacy.

Daniel, currently the Dean of the Cabinet, is the Conference Superintendent for the Central District. He has been a member of the Cabinet since 2004. He has served congregations as Associate Pastor and Senior Pastor, been a Program Consultant of the Conference Council on Ministries of the Iowa Conference, and was Director of Evangelism Ministries and then Director of Evangelism and International Church Development of the General Board of Discipleship.

Speaking to the Iowa Delegation he outlined ten priorities including calling the church back to basics, addressing “the social ills of our day,” initiating new faith communities, living by the Wesleyan advice of “in essentials unity, in non essentials, liberty, and in all things, charity,” developing the leadership of laity and clergy, having a worldwide awareness, and being culturally relevant. – Iowa Annual Conference delegation

ICALG ATTEMPTS TO STOP EXPANSION OF LEGALIZED GAMBLING IN INDIANA

The Steering Committee of the Indiana Coalition Against Legalized Gambling met with Indiana Bishop Mike Coyner and the Rev. Tom Grey, executive director of the National Coalition Against Legalized Gambling, in Indianapolis this past Friday, May 9, to take action stopping the expansion of gambling in Indiana. United Methodists leaders on the committee will bring a resolution to both Indiana Area annual conferences asking both bodies to endorse a resolution asking the State General Assembly to approve a Public Question preventing the expansion of legalized gambling in Indiana without voter approval. The resolution also requests a freeze on the expansion of gambling by the state’s casinos, Hoosier State Lottery and the two racinos soon to open at the state’s two horse racing tracks in Shelbyville and Anderson. United Methodists oppose gambling because of the financial ruin it brings to an estimated 20,000 families in Indiana plus others across the country. The resolution is also available to be circulated and signed by faith organizations and individuals. Download a copy of this resolution for individuals or organizations. – e-HUM

UM-RELATED COLLEGES RANK WELL IN NEW SURVEY, DEPAUW 31ST

Several United Methodist-related colleges and universities, including one in Indiana, did well in a new higher education ranking that’s been designed as an alternative to the influential list issued annually by U.S. News & World Report.

Indiana’s DePauw University in Greencastle was ranked 31st in the country among the best liberal arts schools in the country by the Center for College Affordability and Productivity and 49th by the U.S. News & World Report.

The new list, compiled by the Center for College Affordability and Productivity, takes into account student satisfaction while in college and success after graduating. The list debuts this coming Monday in Forbes magazine and is available now on the publication’s Web site.

Colleges listed on the CCAP ranking were cross-checked with the official list of church-related colleges and universities on the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry Web site. The CCAP ranking is given first, followed by the U.S. News & World Report ranking in parentheses for comparison. Other ranking UM-related schools with DePauw included: Birmingham-Southern College, Millsaps College, Jackson, Miss.; Union College, Barbourville, Ky.; Ohio Wesleyan, Delaware, Ohio: Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pa.; Drew University, Madison, N.J.; Randolph-Macon College, Ashland, Va.: Albion College, Albion, Mich.; and Illinois Wesleyan, Bloomington, Ill. FORMER INDY MAYOR JOINS CTS BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Bart Peterson’s involvement with higher education has taken a new turn as the former Indianapolis mayor has been named to the board of trustees of Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis. Peterson recently served as a resident fellow and guest lecturer at Harvard University, and also has been named a distinguished visiting professor at Ball State University.

Christian Theological Seminary President Edward L. Wheeler has announced that Peterson will join the board July 1 and will work closely with the seminary’s advancement committee.

According to Wheeler, the experience Peterson gained orchestrating two hallmarks of his tenure as mayor may especially lend itself to his new role of board member at CTS. The mayor who established charter schools in Indianapolis and created an initiative to promote the arts will help guide a graduate institution with a self-proclaimed emphasis on educating its students on the relationship between religion and the arts. Many Indiana Area UMC clergy received their seminary education at CTS. – CTS

A NEW HYMNAL – NOW WHAT?

Three hours into the evening session of General Conference in Fort Worth, Texas on April 28, the conference received the recommendation of the legislative committee to approve the revision of the 1989 United Methodist Hymnal. Following a brief but spirited debate, the proposal was approved by a margin of 57 percent to 43 percent. The new hymnal is intended primarily for use within the United States. The linked article reviews the details of what will happen next to bring a recommended new hymnal back to the 2012 General Conference for approval by answering the questions:

  • Who will be on the hymnal committee?
  • Who will be the editor and other officers of the committee?
  • How will the committee do its work?
  • What instructions were given by General Conference?

(UMC.org) — This time of year, when spring slides into summer, is a special season all its own in Hollywood — blockbuster season. And for several years now, blockbuster season has included movies about superheroes. The first to blast onto the screen this year is Iron Man, an adaptation of the enduring Marvel Comics series. An action-packed adventure, Iron Man has a compellingly flawed anti-hero at its center. Underneath all its high-tech flash lies an old fashioned morality tale and story of redemption. The film tells the story of a great sinner who repents and becomes, if not a saint, at least one of the good guys.
