HUNDREDS OF COLUMBUS FLOOD VICTIMS WANT ANSWERS
Hundreds of scared, angry and exhausted victims of the biggest
flood in Bartholomew County history packed Northside Middle School
Tuesday, hoping for answers about how to fix their lives (Columbus
Republic). Some people sat, and many more stood on the sides, in
the back and even outside of the cafeteria door. Columbus Mayor Fred
Armstrong, who called the community meeting, promised officials were
doing all they could to respond to people’s needs. Looters are
pillaging Columbus’ flooded neighborhoods in search of anything they
can sell as scrap – but residents are fighting back. At least four
people were arrested and charged with theft Tuesday after flood
victims accused them of stealing everything from lawn mowers to
washers and dryers. Police said they are taking a “zero tolerance”
approach to looting.
FEMA OPENS JOHNSON COUNTY OFFICE
The Federal Emergency Management Agency has established an office
in Johnson County to help residents coping with Saturday's
record-setting floods. The agency will work with county officials
and residents to evaluate losses and needs, according to a news
release from the Johnson County Commissioners.
FEMA is instructing those affected by the floods to begin cleanup
efforts and to document all losses, preferably with still
photographs and/or video. Expenditures must be documented with
detailed receipts, according to the release.
Also, the city of Greenwood opened a tree debris disposal site at
1244 Fry Road, behind the fire station. Johnson County Solid Waste
will have containers available for storm-related refuse. The site is
open to all county residents, who must show proof of residency, such
as a driver's license or a utility bill.
For more information, call the Johnson County Commissioners at
317-346-4300.
Today, the Johnson County Health Department will offer free
tetanus shots at its temporary location, 1124 N. Main St., Franklin.
The clinic will be held from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.
The shots are available to anyone who has been exposed to flood
water or has suffered a wound and has not had a tetanus booster
within the past five years. The health department has enough vaccine
to treat only those who have a wound or who have been exposed to
flood water.
For more information, call 317-695-9438. – Indianapolis Star

MOHAWK TAKING FLOOD BUCKETS TO FRANKLIN
Mohawk UMC (Indy East District, north of Greenfield) had been
gathering up materials for flood buckets as a year-long buildup to a
mission trip to the Midwest Distribution Center in July. But we
realized that there wasn't any sense in us sitting on these
materials when there were folks who needed them now, just a few
miles away from us. So this afternoon we put flood buckets together,
and Sunday morning in worship we're going to pray over a group of
people who will transport them over to Franklin Grace UMC, which has
agreed to deliver them to aid agencies next week. – Greg Pimlott,
minister, Mohawk UMC
SULLIVAN PASTOR COORDINATING SUPPLIES AT FIRST UMC
Dan Sinkhorn, pastor of First UMC in Sullivan, is coordinating
the collection of supplies at First UMC in Sullivan, Ind. He said,
“Our county and our neighbors to the near north Vigo county have
many needs. We are broadcasting our intentions to our community,
especially other congregations (all denominations). Our plan is to
collect kits prescribed by UMCOR and then distribute them as needed.
After that, we will contribute them to the appropriate agencies. So
far we don't have much, but I anticipate that more will come very
soon. We are willing to serve as a distribution point for Sullivan
County, and we are ready to deliver our supplies in Vigo County as
needed.” Contact
