BIBLE PASSAGE FOR SUNDAY

Jesus said to his disciples: “If you love me, you will do as I command. Then I will ask the Father to send you the Holy Spirit who will help you and always be with you. The Spirit will show you what is true. The people of this world cannot accept the Spirit, because they don’t see or know him. But you know the Spirit, who is with you and will keep on living in you.”

– John 14:15-17

NEWS AND INFORMATION

NORTH CONFERENCE TO CHARTER FIRST HISPANIC CHURCH IN INDIANA

North Indiana United Methodists will charter their first Hispanic congregation this Pentecost Sunday, May 27, in Fort Wayne. The Rev. Lamar Imes, superintendent of the Fort Wayne District, will conduct an organizational meeting of the new Cristiana Getsemani United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. on Pentecost Sunday at Christ United Methodist Church, 1101 McKinnie Avenue, in Fort Wayne, Ind.

According to Edwin Fenstermacher, associate director of Church Development of the North Indiana United Methodist Conference based in Marion, this will be the first Hispanic United Methodist Church to be chartered in Indiana.

Currently, the Cristiana Getsemani congregation is a part of Christ Church. Cristiana Getsemani was founded by Sergio and Janie Reyes. The 40-member fledgling Hispanic congregation became part of Christ Church on Jan. 30, 2005. At the time, the Reyes’ congregation was in search of a place to meet. The Rev. Jill Wright, pastor of Christ Church, and the church’s administrative council not only offered the Hispanic congregation space, but also proposed that it become a part of Christ Church, which it did. Cristiana Getsemani presently averages 140 to150 worshipers and continues to attract new families each week. More than 200 worshipers attended Easter Sunday services.

Imes said at the chartering event, Cristiana Getsemani will become an official United Methodist church, elect a church council, elect officers and receive an expected 120 people into membership. Many of these new members are currently members of Christ Church. A worship service and reception is scheduled to be held following the chartering.

The Reyes will continue to lead the congregation and are presently in the candidacy process to become United Methodist pastors.

BAKER CHAPEL TO CELEBRATE FIRST SUNDAY IN NEW HOME

In an electronic postcard, the church announced: “Our first service in the new Baker Chapel United Methodist Church building (in DeGonia Springs) will be THIS Sunday, May 27th at 9 a.m. with Sunday School following.”

GREENSBURG, KAN. VOLUNTEER RELIEF WORK TEAM OFFICE OPENED

An office in Haviland, Kan. opened Friday, May 18, to schedule United Methodist volunteer work teams needed for tornado recovery in Greensburg, Kan. The Kansas United Methodist Disaster Relief Office in Haviland is coordinating ALL United Methodist volunteer efforts and providing case management for storm victims. Paul Burger is the volunteer director of the center. To volunteer for recovery work following the Greensburg tornado, contact the center at 620-862-5422 or umcrecovery@kswestumc.org. Work teams need to be scheduled at least one week in advance.

FORMER LIBERIAN BISHOP NAMED TO TRUTH COMMISSION IN LIBERIA

A retired United Methodist bishop is part of a nine-member commission seeking to uncover the truth about human rights abuses in Liberia, including the 14-year civil war that ended in 2003. With more than 300 nominations from across the West African nation, former Liberian Bishop Arthur Kulah was named to the country’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Kulah spoke about his involvement to colleagues April 30 as the United Methodist Council of Bishops met near Myrtle Beach, S.C. “Our responsibility is to bring peace, unity, reconciliation and security to Liberia,” said Kulah, who was inducted into service on the commission in 2006.

The commission is seeking to understand crimes and abuses that occurred between 1979 and 2003. A peace agreement signed in 2003 ushered in Liberia’s first period of relative calm in more than 14 years. “We want to find out the cause of war and what made us kill each other,” Kulah said. – UMNS

LEADERSHIP GROUP FOSTERS CHURCHWIDE ‘CULTURE OF CALL’

One year after a startling report showed significantly fewer young people seeking to become clergy in The United Methodist Church, a new advisory team has mapped out a strategy to create a churchwide “culture of call.” The National Leadership Development Advisory Team, based in Nashville, is expediting information about the ordination process to district superintendents, boards of ordained ministry, candidacy mentors, pastor/staff parish relations committees and district committees. A Web site at www.explorecalling.org is being updated with materials for both young people exploring a call to ordained ministry and those who work with them. The team and its work are being organized by the United Methodist Board of Higher Education and Ministry.

Saying the church as a whole has begun to recognize its leadership crisis, several team members cited a 2006 report revealing that only 4.69 percent of Elders in The United Methodist Church are under age 35. The report was developed by the Lewis Center for Church Leadership at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington and its director, the Rev. Lovett Weems. The center is working on a follow-up study. – UMNS

NCC’S BOB EDGAR TO LEAD NATIONAL ADVOCACY GROUP

The Rev. Bob Edgar, a United Methodist pastor, former congressman and current chief executive of the National Council of Churches base in New York City, will soon lead Common Cause, a national advocacy group. His election as president and chief executive of Common Cause was made public May 22 by that organization. He succeeds Chellie Pingree. Edgar’s departure date from the NCC has not been announced.

Edgar, 63, who has led the NCC since 2000, told the ecumenical group’s governing board last October that he would not seek a third four-year term. The search for a new chief executive is under way. He brought the council, which now has several million dollars in reserve, through a financial crisis and initiated a major campaign against poverty. Before joining the NCC, Edgar was president of Claremont (Calif.) School of Theology from 1990 to 2000 and earlier had served six terms as a congressman from Pennsylvania. – UMNS

RESOURCES EXPLORE UNITED METHODIST-EPISCOPAL TIES

United Methodists and Episcopalians have a new way to get to know each other. Building upon the interim agreement of shared Eucharist approved by the United Methodist Council of Bishops in 2005 and the Episcopal General Convention in 2006, the two denominations have released resources to promote study of the agreement at all levels. “Make Us One With Christ” is a report based on the sessions between the Episcopal and United Methodist dialogue teams from 2002 to 2006. A second resource is a study guide version of the report that includes discussion points, questions for reflection and worship tips.

The report and study guide for “Make Us One With Christ” are available for $2.95 each. For ordering information, contact the Commission on Christian Unity and Interreligious Concerns via e-mail at questions@gccuic-umc.org or by telephone at 212-749-3553. – UMNS

COMMENTARY

A PENTECOST VISION FOR AN INCLUSIVE CHURCH

United Methodists need to be sensitive to the need for inclusiveness and diversity when they vote for delegates to the 2008 General Conference, as well as for bishops and other leaders, writes Bishop Linda Lee, president of the United Methodist Commission on Religion and Race. The commission has launched an “Inclusiveness Counts!” campaign to promote that emphasis.

PLEASE JOIN WITH THE NORTH INDIANA CONFERENCE PRAYER TEAM

Will you join the North Indiana Conference Spiritual Growth and Prayer Ministry Teams in praying for the North Indiana Annual Conference session, which begins in less than one week? Praying in unity pleases God and breaks down dividing walls that our enemy would like to keep intact. Let’s start by giving God glory for Who God is. Pray this prayer with the team:

“Our great God, we praise You for who You are. We honor You as the sovereign One who is omniscient, omnipresent and all powerful. We acknowledge that we are nothing without You. We give You all of our worship for there truly is no other god like You. We adore You for you alone are wise. We invite you to come in all of Your glory into the churches, worship services and hearts of individuals across the North Indiana Conference. Lead us as only You can, giving us Your heart for our communities and our world. We humbly submit to Your plan for Your church to become the true representation of Christ in a fallen world. Use us as You will; fill us with Your Holy Spirit power for the work ahead of us. Thank You for hearing our prayer. In Jesus’ Name we pray. Amen.”

Thank you for praying with us.

For the Spiritual Growth and Prayer Ministry Teams,
Paula Shrock

MOVIE REVIEW

SHREK THE THIRD

Watch Video Review

  • Studio: DreamWorks Pictures

  • Directed By: Chris Miller

  • Cast: Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy, Mike Myers

  • Rating: PG for some crude humor, suggestive content and swashbuckling action.

  • Running Time: 93 minutes

  • Release Date: 05/17/2007

  • Genre: Family and Kids

Common Sense Review

Reviewed By:
Sandie Angulo Chen

It’s not an animated masterpiece like the enchanting first two classics, but SHREK THE THIRD is still one of those rare films that everyone from preschoolers to grandparents will find irresistibly amusing.

Mike Myers and Cameron Diaz return as happily married ogres Shrek and Fiona, who inherit the kingdom of Far Far Away from ailing King Harold (John Cleese). Shrek doesn’t think he’s fit to wear a crown, so he and dependably side-splitting sidekicks Donkey (Eddie Murphy) and Puss In Boots (Antonio Banderas) set out to find the only other living heir to the throne, Arthur Pendragon (Justin Timberlake) – but not before Fiona announces she’s royally pregnant. For the full review, log on to http://www.commonsensemedia.org/movie-reviews/Shrek-Third.html.

WHAT PARENTS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT … SHREK

From Common Sense Media, May 16, 2007

  • The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is using Shrek in PSAs to promote a healthy lifestyle.

  • A review by children’s advocacy group Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood found Shrek in 16 food promotions, including M&M’s, Cheetos, and PopTarts.

  • This mismanaged marketing doesn’t reflect the quality or entertainment of the film, but it’s all targeted at kids.

  • Explain the two different messages to your kids. While supporting the need to exercise and stay healthy, point out that Shrek’s junk food tie-ins undercut his other message.
