ELMA L. HEADY, widow of the late Rev. James T. Heady, Elder (SIC), who
last served at Evansville Trinity UMC, and daughter of the late Rev. Harold and
Frances Claycamp, died Wednesday, April 22, 2009. Calling hours are 2 to 8:30
p.m., Friday, April 24, at Alexander Newburgh Chapel, 5333 State Route 261,
Newburgh, IN 47630 and Saturday, April 25 from 9 to 10 a.m. until service time
at Aldersgate UMC, 5130 Lincoln Avenue, Evansville, Ind. A memorial is scheduled
for 10 a.m. the same day at Aldersgate Church, with burial at Alexander Memorial
Park in Evansville. Survivors include: sons, Michael Alan Heady and James David

JANET SOLDNER NUSSBAUM, widow of the late Rev. Tillman Nussbaum
(former NIC), died April 9, 2009 at Heritage Pointe in Warren, Ind. A memorial
service was held on Monday, April 13 at Heritage Pointe with the Rev. John
Pattison and the Rev. Glendon Klassen officiating, with burial in the Spring
Hill Cemetery in Warren. Survivors include: sister, Treva Schaffter of Geneva,
Ind.
PAUL TROKE, father of the Rev. G. Paul (Butch) Troke,
part time local pastor serving as Associate Pastor at Beaver Dam UMC (former
NIC), died Saturday April 4, 2009. A memorial service was held Wednesday, April
8 at 11 a.m. Survivors include: wife, Thelma; son Butch (wife Wanda).

MARTHA LOUISE CARLTON of Bloomington, widow of the late
Rev. Samuel E. Carlton, Elder (former NIC) and mother-in-law to the Rev. Dr.
Douglas Anderson, Michiana District Superintendent (former NIC), died on April
3, 2009. A memorial service was held April 7 in Brazil, Ind., with burial at
Clearview Cemetery. Survivors include: children, James Carlton of Brazil, Janet
Anderson of Muncie, Joan Zimmerman of Bloomington; eight grandchildren; six

MARTHA ENGLAND, mother of Marsha Coyner and
mother-in-law of Bishop Michael J. Coyner died April 2, 2009. A memorial service

FRANCES HAMMOND, mother of Janice Grindle and
mother-in-law of the Rev. Maurice Grindle (former NIC), pastor at Grace UMC in

DONALD E. HARRIS, father of Donna Harris-Wilfong and
father-in-law of the Rev. Charles Wilfong, New Albany District Superintendent
(former SIC), died March 31. A memorial service was held in Marissa, Ill. with
burial at the Marissa Cemetery. Survivors include: wife, Faith Harris;

ALICE C. SPRAGUE, widow of the late Rev. Kenneth
Sprague, Elder (former SIC) died March 27, 2009. A memorial service was held
March 31 at the Wood & Oakley Funeral Home in Milton, Ky. with burial at Moffett

WALTER WAYMON DRANE, father of the Rev. Kevin Drane
(former NIC), pastor at Royal Center UMC, died March 28, 2009. A memorial
service was held April 1 at the Indiana Veterans Home Chapel in West Lafayette.

STELLA NORDBY, widow of the late Rev. Frank E. Nordby,
Elder (former SIC), died March 27, 2009. Visitation will be at the Franklin UM

p.m. followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. with burial at Washington Park

JESSIE A. SKINNER, widow of the late Rev. W. Lavern

RICHARD D. DOLBY, retired pastor (former NIC), died March 25.

BISHOP OLE E. BORGEN, 83, former United Methodist
bishop of the Northern Europe Central Conference and former president of the
Council of Bishops, died March 24 at Lillestrøm, Norway. A memorial service was
held Thursday, April 2 near Lillestrøm. His experience of God’s calling to
fulltime ministry brought him in 1956 to studies in the USA. In 1963 he was
ordained elder in the Western North Carolina Conference, where he also served as
a local church pastor. In 1968 he was granted a Doctor of Theology degree at
Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Ky. His leadership skills brought him
back to Europe, and he became bishop’s assistant and pastor in Sweden in 1968.
In 1970 he was appointed as secretary and leader of the World Methodist
Council’s office in Geneva, Switzerland. In September the same year he was
elected bishop of the Northern Europe Central Conference. After having served
during 19 years as an active bishop he retired in 1989. Between 1989 and 1992 he
gave lectures as professor at Asbury Theological Seminary.
LAWRENCE TEDROW, retired Elder (former SIC), died March 24. Visitation
will be March 27 from 4-8 p.m. at DeBaun Funeral Home, 85 E. Springhill Drive,
Terre Haute, IN, 47802, and Saturday, March 28 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at Brocksmith-Blake
& Wagler Funeral Home, 430 Main Street, Montgomery, IN 47558. The funeral
service will be 1 p.m. March 28 at Brocksmith-Blake & Wagler Funeral Home with
burial at Truelove Cemetery. Survivors include: Wife, Dovie, 2219 S. 8th Street,

Edinburgh, IN; daughters Debbie Siekman (husband Doug Trester) of Aurora and

ERIC WADE BUTTERY, 21, son of Wendy Buttery-Canon part-time local
pastor of Economy and Greens Fork UMCs in the Rushville District (former SIC),
died March 21, as a result of injuries sustained in a traffic accident in Union
County, Ind. A memorial service was held March 24 at the College Corner (Ohio)
UMC, with burial at College Corner Cemetery. Survivors include: mother, Wendy A.
Canon and stepfather Tom of Economy; his father, Dani Buttery and his girlfriend
Amy; a sister, Shawny McKee of Indianapolis; a brother, Robert Charles Buttery
of Indianapolis; maternal grandfather, John Grover of Punta Gorda, Fla.;
paternal grandmother and step-grandfather, Winette Ellis and Jerry of Salem,

RUTH CATHERINE IMLER VAYHINGER, 91, eldest sister of the Rev. William
(Bill) Imler (retired Elder of the former NIC), died Wednesday, March 18, 2009
in Colorado. She was a native of Arcadia, Ind. Visitation will be at Swan Law
Funeral Directors on Sunday, March 22 from 1 to 4 p.m. A memorial service is
scheduled to be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, March 22, at the First United
Methodist Church, 420 N. Nevada Ave., in Colorado Springs, Colo. She was the
wife of former professor John Vayhinger. Survivors include: son Jack (Carol)
Vayhinger; and daughter Karen Vayhinger Childs (all of Colorado Springs), 10

BRUCE E. PALMER, 69, of Monroeville, died Saturday,
March 14, 2009 at Fort Wayne following a sudden illness. He was a member of
Monroeville UMC and served as the Fort Wayne District Coordinator of Lay
Ministries for the past 30 years. A memorial service was held on Thursday, March
19 at Monroeville UMC, 900 Indianapolis Road in Monroeville, Ind. 46158. The
Rev. Denise Lapsley officiated, with burial at the Monroeville Memorial
Cemetery. Survivors include: wife, Angela Presler-Palmer; daughter, Doris Palmer
of Auburn, Rachelle O’Connor of Montpelier, Ohio and Elisabeth Palmer of

LURA LORRAINE GRAY, 93, of Madison, Ind. died on March
4, 2009. She was a native Jefferson County, Ind. and wife of the late Rev.
Harold E. Gray, a UM minister in the Wisconsin Conference. A memorial service
was held on March 7, at the North UMC in Madison with interment to follow in the
Brooksburg Cemetery. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold E. Gray;
and son, Harvey D. Gray.
PHYLLIS DICKEN, widow of the late Rev. John Dicken and
mother of the Rev. Mark Dicken, (Newburgh UMC – former NIC), died March 1, 2009.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m., Friday, March 6 in the Amanda Reid Chapel
at Wesley Manor, 1555 N. Main Street in Frankfort, Ind. and from 12:30 p.m. to
2:30 p.m. at St. Matthew UMC, 1951 Wilshire Drive in Frankfort. A memorial
service is scheduled for 2:30 p.m., Friday, March 6 at St. Matthew UMC.

LOIS DELL, 79, mother of the Rev. Cyndi Alte, director
of congregational health at Clarion Health in Indianapolis (former SIC), died
Friday Feb. 20, 2009 at Mason Ohio. Survivors include: husband Bob Dell;
children Barb Rider, the Rev. Cyndi Alte and Mike Dell, seven grandchildren and
one great-grandchild. A memorial service is scheduled at Church of the Saviour

WOODROW W. ‘TOM’ KENNELL, retired Elder (former SIC),

MINNIE LEE JONES, widow of the late Rev. Gerald Jones
(former NIC), died Feb. 14, 2009. A memorial service is scheduled for Friday,

with visitation one hour prior. The Rev. Greg Enstrom will be officiating.

DAVID EUGENE (GENE) DUNFEE, father-in-law to Royce
Ruckman (CEO of the North Indiana United Methodist Foundation), died Feb. 6,

DANIEL A. BENGSTON, retired pastor (former NIC), died Jan. 26, 2009 in Richmond,
Mo. A memorial service was held Jan. 29 at the Richmond UMC in Richmond, Mo.
Survivors include: his wife, Jean Baker Bengston; her daughters, Cathy Habermehl,
Ellen McDonald and Laura Baker; one sister, Doris Combs of Niles, Mich.; one

ROBERT McBRIDE, 83, died Jan. 19, 2008, retired professor of philosophy and
religion and director of graduate studies at the University of Indianapolis

at Albright College in Reading, Pa. (1966-1979) and president of Simpson College
in Indianola, Iowa (1979 through retirement in 1987). Survivors include: Wife,

FLORISE M. JACKSON, 65, chair of the
finance committee of the United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries and
a long-time national figure in United Methodist Women, died on November 12 at a
hospital in New Jersey.
A native of the island of St. Thomas in the US
Virgin Islands, Newton was a member of the Covenant UMC of the Plainfields, and
lived in nearby Piscataway, N.J. She died of a heart attack.

LARRY V. OMAN, 65, a former clergy member (SIC), died Oct. 4, 2007 in Seattle,
after a six-year battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife, Martha; and
children Erik, Kirstin, Kyle and Karin. A memorial service was scheduled to be
held at the Steamboat Springs UMC in Colorado Oman was a clergy member of South
Indiana Conference in 1969 and transferred to the Rocky Mountain Conference in
1984. Oman served at University Church in Indianapolis as a student pastor.
After completing his M.Div at Princeton University, he returned to University
Church where he served as an associate pastor. In the South Indiana Conference
he also served at the Conference office, and churches as Nashville and Peru.

HARRY HAINES, 89, a United Methodist clergyperson and director of the United
Methodist Committee on Relief from 1966 to 1983, died March 29, 2007. He
suffered a heart attack in Eugene, Ore., where he and his wife, Loma, lived in
retirement. Haines, a native of New Zealand, was a missionary in China in the
1940s and later in Malaysia. He then worked in the division of interchurch aid,
refugees and world service of the World Council of Churches. At UMCOR, he was an
advocate for service to those in need and for education about the impact of
poverty and political oppression on millions of people.
PAULINE RHINE, widow of the late Rev. James
Rhine, and mother of the Rev. Terry Rhine, pastor of Chesterton UMC (NIC), died

BISHOP THOMAS SYLA BANGURA (retired), 81,
died Sept. 24, 2006 in Freetown, Sierra Leone, nearly one year after the Sept.
25 burial of his wife. Bangura began his ministry in The Evangelical United
Brethren Church and served as bishop from 1979 to 1992. According to the Rev.
Joe Wagner, Bishop Bangura was "one of the key players in the founding of
Operation Classroom.
