Oxford congregations celebrate corn harvest for Food Resource Bank

OXFORD, Ind. - More than 200 people from the Oxford United Methodist Church and First Christian Church of Lafayette, Ind. gathered together at the Oxford farm where this past spring they dedicated proceeds from 20 acres of corn to the Food Resource Bank. They harvested that corn on Oct. 21. Following a worship service and carry-in dinner, ten area farmers provided combine rides for everyone as the crop was harvested. Other activities included a petting zoo, pumpkin painting and craft projects.

This is the fourth year the Oxford church has participated in this worthwhile mission project. The rural church provides the land and labor. The urban church contributes toward the cost of production. Some area agri-businesses also make contributions. Each church then selects a mission project through the Food Resource Bank. Oxford UMC has pledged its half of the proceeds to help replenish the cattle population in Mozambique which has been depleted 90 percent by civil war, floods and fire. USAID will match the proceeds.

This Food Resource Bank project fights world hunger. Each year more congregations are participating and it is a good way to team rural and city congregations for a common goal.
