INDIANAPOLIS - Bishop Michael J. Coyner announced Feb. 22 the appointment of the Rev. Brian K. White, senior pastor of United Methodist Temple in Terre Haute, Ind., as superintendent of the Columbus District based in Columbus, Ind., effective July 1.

White succeeds the Rev. Dr. James C. Bushfield, who will become the new Director of Connectional Ministries for the South Indiana Conference in Bloomington, Ind.

White, 47, was appointed as senior pastor at United Methodist Temple in 2001. Since being ordained an Elder in the South Indiana Conference in 1988, and has served churches at Bloomington St. Paul, Fort Branch, Indianapolis Southport and Fairland. White has a bachelor's degree in music education from Indiana State University in Terre Haute and a Master of Divinity degree from Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Ky.

He has served as chairperson of the Council on Finance and Administration, a member of the South Indiana Conference Executive Committee and chairperson Indiana Area Council on Finance and Administration.

He is married to Michelle White. They have been married 23 years. Michelle is employed by Indiana University in Bloomington. Their daughter (19) attends Ball State University. Their son (17) is a high school junior.

As pastimes, White says he enjoys reading and spending time with his family. He plays the French horn and taught band before entering the ministry. He also is a licensed high school soccer referee.

White is a third generation pastor in South Indiana. His grandfather, William J. Byrum, Sr. was a pastor in the EUB church in South Indiana, who retired in 1968. He served several churches in retirement. White's uncle, Gordon Byrum, died of cancer in 1983 while serving Center UMC on Indianapolis' south side. His mother, Miriam White, has been very involved in the conference United Methodist Women and has served as president of the New Albany District United Methodist Women.
