Roberts returns to Ohio

Simpson named director of Indy United Methodist Metro Ministries

INDIANAPOLIS - Bishop Mike Coyner appointed the Rev. Dr. Douglas Simpson as the new Executive Director of the United Methodist Metro Ministries effective July 1. Coyner also announced that the Rev. Dr. Gwendolyn C. Roberts, former director of Metro Ministries, has become the Metro Ministries Director for the West Ohio Conference effective July 1.

Simpson previously served as senior pastor of the Fairview United Methodist Church in Bloomington, an appointment he held since 2000. In Indiana, he previously served Indianapolis Asbury, Indianapolis Faith, New Spirit, Jeffersonville Wesley and on staff of the South Indiana Conference. Simpson was ordained Elder in 1975 in the Detroit Conference. He also served as a member of the Minnesota Conference from 1978 to 1981 and then transferred to the South Indiana Conference.

He is a graduate of American University in Washington, D.C., Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Ill. and holds a D. Min. degree from Newburg Theological Seminary in Newburg, Ind.

Coyner said, "The two Indianapolis District Superintendents are very excited to have Doug coming into the Metro Ministries office, and I personally look forward to working with Doug as he continues the fine leadership of Dr. Gwen Roberts. We are sorry to lose Gwen, but she will be an excellent addition to the staff in West Ohio."

Roberts was originally from Ohio and much of her family lives in Ohio. She was ordained in the African Methodist Episcopal Church in 1991 and served churches in Xenia, Springfield, Cedarville and Bellefontaine, Ohio, before transferring her membership to the South Indiana Conference in 1997. In Indiana she served churches in Scott and Indianapolis before becoming executive director of Metro Ministries in 2005.

Metro Ministries oversees the mission and ministries of the Asian Help Service located at Broadway United Methodist Church; Brightwood Community Center; Fletcher Place Ministries, East of Fountain Square; Vida Nueva United Methodist Church and Centro Familiar on West Washington Street; and Helping Hands 2007, an Indianapolis Districts program to assist aged, physically challenged and persons with some health disability through United Methodist congregations.
