Water access needed at Ganta Hospital in Liberia

GANTA, Liberia - Ganta United Methodist Hospital, located in northern Liberia, is appealing to United Methodists everywhere to help them with their ongoing water access and connection needs.

The hospital has survived more than 14 years of a civil war that has left the facility looted and almost obliterated. Many times doctors and nurses do not have adequate gauze, bandages and antibiotics to treat the more than 450,000 Liberians the hospital serves, although fresh water access is currently the hospital's most pressing need.

The hospital staff has managed to restore 90 percent of its water facilities through grants from Operation Classroom (Indiana Area United Methodist Foundation), Holston Conference Foundation and meager local financial resources. This has brought water through the plumbing fixtures in the hospital, school and staff residences.

Although much of the water access has been restored, Ganta Hospital is still in urgent need. Funds are needed for the purchase of electrical wires to allow the hospital to connect the mission station's deepest well to their power supply. This will allow the ever-growing hospital to continue to serve its patients throughout the dry season (October to May).

The well also will serve the nurses' dormitory when the nursing school moves back to the mission station in October. The total cost of these supplies is $5,350. The hospital's current local financial resources will not cover the cost.

Those interested in donating can visit www.operationclassroom.org for more information.
