Howell named as new Evansville District SuperintendentINDIANAPOLIS - Indiana Area Bishop Mike Coyner has named the Rev. Glenn B. Howell, senior pastor of The Turning Pointe United Methodist Church in Evansville, as the next Evansville District Superintendent. He will begin his new appointment in Evansville on July 1. In making this announcement, Coyner said, "Glenn is a proven pastor who has grown a new church start over a 13 year period into a large and faithful United Methodist Church. He is an active member of the South Indiana Conference Council on Finance and Administration, and, as a PK (preacher's kid) knows and supports our United Methodist system while bringing a fresh perspective and creative leadership. He will be a welcome addition to the Cabinet team." Howell, 49, was ordained an Elder in the South Indiana Conference in 1989. He served the Gosport/Shiloh-Wesley/Millgrove churches in the Bloomington District as a student, the Dana-Bono churches in the Terre Haute District, and since 1993, The Turning Pointe UMC, located on 25 acres on Evansville's west side. The Turning Pointe has grown from a first-year average of 60 members, meeting in a lecture hall at University of Southern Indiana, to a congregation of 400. He is married to Donna, who works for Old National Bank in Evansville. They have a daughter, Moriah, 13, who is a student at Perry Heights Middle School. Howell, a native of Michigan, moved to Indiana when he was boy. His father, the late Rev. Morris Howell, was a pastor in Michigan who transferred to the North Indiana Conference. Glenn Howell graduated from Rochester (Ind.) High School. He also graduated from the University of Indianapolis and Christian Theological Seminary. Upon Coyner's announcement, he told Together, "Most of my life is taken up with church and family. I do work out, though, and am an absolute golf lover. Play anytime I get the chance and have enjoyed qualifying and playing in the Evansville City tournament for the past few years. Friends tell me if I preached as much, or as well, as I play golf, all of southern Indiana would be converted to The United Methodist Church." He also said that becoming a new district superintendent, "will be tough for me to leave a vibrant and dynamic church. There is a sense of excitement, though, to begin a job that has the possibility of helping pastors and churches claim God's future for their ministry. It will be especially gratifying to help our bishop achieve his vision for the ministry of this conference. I have been blessed to see God do wonderful things in the local church and truly believe that God will use faithful people with faith-filled attitudes to turn the hope of the Kingdom into a reality."
