2005 giving for hurricane relief surpasses $62 millionAs of Dec. 31, 2005, the United Methodist Committee on Relief reports that giving for hurricane relief during the year totaled $62,373,764. Most of the money will be filtered through the annual conferences along the Gulf Coast, but some will go for work in Guatemala, El Salvador, Mexico and Nicaragua. Decisions about the expenditures will be made in April at the agency's board meeting. UMCOR already distributed more than $6 million. Paul Dirdak, deputy general secretary for the General Board of Global Ministries, which oversees UMCOR, anticipates a four-year recovery effort. Most of the $62 million was given in response to Hurricane Katrina, though some moneys were designated for the Hurricane Rita response and others were donated in response to hurricanes before Katrina.
