Clemenz chosen to lead anti-gambling coalition

Loren Clemenz, a retired pastor of the North Indiana Conference now living in Fishers, has agreed to lead the Indiana Coalition Against Legalized Gambling, an anti-gambling coalition organized by United Methodists in 1993.

Clemenz was named by a task force led by Bishop Mike Coyner and included representatives of both Indiana North and South Conference Boards of Church and Society. He plans to rebuild the strength of ICALG among United Methodists, and also will be working with the North Conference area on gambling concerns chaired by the Rev. Scott Schoaff of Fort Wayne and the Gambling Recovery Ministries directed by the Rev. Janet Jacobs of Dillsboro, Ind., a ministry supported by the South Indiana Conference.

Meanwhile, two bills to introduce slot machines at the state's horse race tracks were introduced this past month into the Indiana General Assembly. Senate Bill 239, introduced by Senator Lutz into the Senate on Jan. 9, was referred to Committee on Rules and Legislative Procedure. House Bill 1077, introduced by Representatives Gutwein, Lehe and Reske into the House on Jan. 5, was referred to the Committee on Public Policy and Veterans Affairs. Copies of both bills can be found online at www.in.gov/legislative.

Chances are slim that either bill will come to the floor this session of the legislature.

Clemenz may be reached at 317-845-5655.
