United Methodists to celebrate Native American Ministries Sunday, April 30Kendra Juarez, 10, loves her church family, and she shows it. Whether she is singing at worship or enjoying a cookout with her church friends, Kendra's attitude says, "I know I am a child of God, and that's wonderful!" "We want to give our children a spiritual message - and to help them maintain their culture," notes Betty Weston, co-coordinator, Native American United Methodist Gathering in Tempe, Ariz. "We try to give our children guidance and to be examples for them. As they become more involved in the church, their voices are heard." The Native American Gathering provides a spiritual base and a support system for Kendra and her family, whose heritage is of the Pima Tribe.
Kendra's mother struggles with the daily challenges of parenting. Weston assures her: "I encourage her to continue to believe and to praise God. I tell her: Your church family is here for you, and I am just a phone call away." Your offering on Native American Ministries Sunday nurtures outreach with persons of all ages and provides scholarships for United Methodist Native American seminarians. "See what God has given us, that we should be called children of God" (1John 3:1a). Help Native Americans like Kendra experience God's love in their lives. Give generously on Native American Ministries Sunday, April 30. Your gift makes a world of difference. Thank you!
