Indianapolis youth appears on state's Disabilities Awareness Month poster

INDIANAPOLIS - Connor Wantz, a seventh-grader at Northview Middle School in Indianapolis and the son of the Rev. John and Tami Wantz of Meridian Street United Methodist Church, appeared in March on the governor's March on Disability Awareness Month posters (www.in.gov/gcpd).

Some days, the younger Wantz can't move the left side of his body. Other times, he's as active as any other 13-year-old, playing sports in the Carmel Dads' Club or Allisonville Little League Challenger Baseball League.

Connor Wantz suffers from Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood, a rare neurological disorder that's been diagnosed in about 100 people in the United States, according to his mom. It causes paralysis on the left side of Connor's body and seizures that are relieved by sleep.

"We don't make a big deal of it," his mom recently told reporters. "He loves life."

March was Disability Awareness Month, and the Governor's Council for People with Disabilities theme was "Band together. Everyone plays a part." Pictured with Connor and constantly by his side is his assistance dog Amali.
