Indiana United Methodist Historical Society now embraces stateFRANKLIN, Ind. - A single society dedicated to furthering the appreciation and study of the history of Indiana United Methodism now claims the whole of Indiana as the reach of its interests. At its annual meeting in April at the Franklin United Methodist Community, the South Indiana Conference United Methodist Historical Society accepted the invitation of the North Indiana Conference Commission on Archives and History to expand northward, becoming the Indiana United Methodist Historical Society. A vote of more than two-thirds of the members present in Franklin accepted a revised set of bylaws, doubling the size, concern, and commitment of what is now the Indiana United Methodist Historical Society. John Baughman, a founder of the former SIC UMHS, reviewed the history of the South Indiana Conference historical society as an outgrowth of the South Indiana Conference Commission on Archives and History, having been established as independent of, but amenable to that commission. Baughman also presented a revised set of bylaws, broadening the society's interests to include Indiana Methodist history throughout the breadth of the state. Comments were welcomed from the floor. The Rev. James Gentry, representing Indiana Area Bishop Michael Coyner, approved of what was being proposed, saying the expansion now being considered moved SICUMHS in the same direction that the Bishop's cabinet is now moving - that is, toward a larger frame of reference, a "consideration of the larger picture," one that "bridges conferences." Douglas Davies, speaking for the North Indiana Conference Commission on Archives and History, which he chairs, publicly stated, "We (of the North Conference) are amazed at what your organization has accomplished. We want to grab hold of your coattails." After a motion closed discussion and a vote approved acceptance of the new bylaws, President Jack Haskins said that those nominated as officers for 2005-2006 and accepted at this April 30 meeting would continue to serve, with the North Indiana Conference being represented by Douglas Davies, chair of the North Indiana Conference Commission on Archives and History. Future Executive Committee members will be selected from both conferences. Memberships in this new statewide Indiana United Methodist Historical Society, are now being accepted. For application or more information, contact Lois Shelton, P.O. Box 357, R. R. 2, Washington, IN 47501. One-year memberships are $10 for an individual, $15 for a family, and $25 for a congregation.
