New Beginnings theme will set the pace at South Indiana Annual Conference in BloomingtonUsing New Beginnings as a theme, three United Methodist bishops will preach or lead Bible studies at the upcoming South Indiana Conference Session June 9-11 at the Indiana University Auditorium in Bloomington. The three include: Bishops David Lawson, Lindsey Davis and Mike Coyner. LawsonBishop Lawson is scheduled to preach during the Memorial Service on Thursday, June 9 at the opening of the session. He retired in 1996 after serving the church 40 years as an ordained minister. Lawson was pastor of several South Conference churches and also served as a Wesley Foundation minister, a district superintendent and as Conference Council director. He was elected to the episcopacy in 1984 and served as bishop eight years in Wisconsin and four years in Illinois. After retirement, he served the Council of Bishops as liaison to the denomination's 13 seminaries. He also represented the council in Liberia, Burundi and Kenya. He currently resides in Franklin, Ind., with his wife Martha. DavisBishop Davis is scheduled to preach on Thursday evening, June 9 during the church growth and evangelism event following an all-conference dinner. He also will preach during the Friday morning worship service when deacon and elder candidates will be introduced and retirees will be recognized.
Davis, 57, has served as bishop of the North Georgia Area since 1996. He was elected to the episcopacy in 1996 from the Kentucky Conference where he was superintendent of the Lexington District. Born in Durham, N.C., Davis spent most of his life in Kentucky and holds degrees from Union College, University of Kentucky, Lexington Theological Seminary, and Kentucky Wesleyan College. He was ordained an Elder in 1981. He has served on the General Council on Ministries (1996-2000), as Director of the General Board of Global Ministries, and President of the United Methodist Committee on Relief (2000-2004). He is currently Vice-President of the General Council on Finance and Administration. Davis is married to the former Jennifer Mink of Pineville, Ky. Their children are: Laura Ellen Miller, an elementary school teacher in Lexington, Ky.; and John Lindsey Davis, who works and lives in Atlanta. CoynerIndiana Area Bishop Mike Coyner, who preached last year as Bishop of the Dakotas Area, will lead six Bible studies during the three-day conference session. Scripture he intends to touch on include: 1 Corinthians 12, Matthew 25, Acts 6:1-7, 2:44-47 and 2 Corinthians 9.
