Center for Aging and Community receives federal funds$320,000 will support efforts on residential, workplace issues INDIANAPOLIS - The Center for Aging and Community at the University of Indianapolis is receiving a $320,000 federal appropriation to continue its advocacy, education and research on issues surrounding America's aging population. The funding in the 2005 Omnibus Appropriations bill will support efforts in the center's two key focus areas: Aging in Place, which details the need for community-based services that help older adults live independently, and Meaningful Work for Older Adults, which addresses the many issues surrounding the aging of the workforce and the intent of most Americans to continue working past the standard retirement age. On the work issue, the center has organized an upcoming conference for business leaders and service providers, "Managing the 21st Century Workplace," 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 15 at the Indianapolis Marriott Downtown. Veteran network newsman Hugh Downs will headline a program of nationally recognized experts discussing the keys to managing a maturing workforce and the challenges and opportunities that businesses face as the baby boom generation ponders retirement. The conference has been approved for 2.5 recertification credit hours toward PHR and SPHR recertification through the Human Resource Certification Institute. Founded in 2001, the Center for Aging and Community is one of Indiana's leading gerontology centers, with programming to help community organizations serve older adults effectively. Using an interdisciplinary approach that draws from the University of Indianapolis' faculty and resources in health care, education, business and other fields, the center develops partnerships between higher education and the broader community. Overall goals include promoting older adults as community and family assets and improving their quality of life in Indianapolis and beyond.
