Bishop Coyner and Governor Daniels share common ground in first meetingINDIANAPOLIS - Bishop Michael J. Coyner paid a welcome visit to Governor Mitch Daniels Feb. 18 in his office at the state capitol. Coyner and Daniels spent half-an-hour getting acquainted with each other and briefly discussed the church's position on issues such as gambling, smoking, and children and poverty being considered by the General Assembly. Daniels told Coyner he was baptized a Methodist in his native Pennsylvania. His parents later joined a Presbyterian church. Daniels maintains Presbyterian membership. Coyner also assured Daniels that he would be praying for him. The bishop's visit was arranged by State Senator Patricia Miller, a member of Old Bethel UMC in Indianapolis. Coyner then toured the capitol with Miller who introduced him to her staff and to Senator Robert Garton, president pro tempore of the Senate and member of First UMC in Columbus. Miller, a 22-year veteran of the Senate, serves as assistant majority floor leader. Last updated on 25 Apr 2008 |
