O'Bannon to assist college students

INDIANAPOLIS -- According to a recent story in the Indianapolis Star, Judy O'Bannon has accepted a part-time position with the Plowshares and Peace House initiative, a collaborative effort of three Indiana colleges to teach young people about conflict resolution and the application of justice in the building of communities.

O'Bannon's appointment as director of external affairs for the Peace House was announced by Erwin Boschmann, retired vice chancellor and professor of chemistry at Indiana University East campus in Richmond, executive director of Peace House.

O'Bannon will have an office in the Old Centrum at Central Avenue United Methodist Church, where the former Indiana first lady is a member, and around the corner from where she and the late governor lived when he was lieutenant governor.

It's a part of town she knows and loves, and the mission of Plowshares is one she embraces, O'Bannon said.

She said students will pursue questions like: How do people of different backgrounds produce communities that work? How can conflict be handled in a more positive manner?

"You build good teams at home," O'Bannon said. "It's about building leadership teams for Indiana."

Plowshares was established in 2002 with a $13.8 million grant from Lilly Endowment, allowing Earlham, Goshen and Manchester colleges to develop peace, justice and conflict studies at each of the three campuses, in Indianapolis, nationally and globally.

The Plowshares Peace Studies Program at Indianapolis House is sponsored by the Plowshares Peace Studies Collaborative of Earlham, Goshen and Manchester Colleges, funded by the Lilly Endowment Inc. Six community members from central Indiana serve on the board of directors for the Peace House, among them the Rev. Richard E. Hamilton, retired senior minister of North United Methodist Church in Indianapolis.

O'Bannon is also involved in the series "Communities Building Communities" for public television station WFYI in Indianapolis, and is active in Habitat for Humanity and other causes.
