Igniting Ministries training event aims at changing church lifestyles

Living Our Promise," an Igniting Ministry training event, aimed at helping local United Methodist congregations learn about marketing themselves and honing their welcoming skills, will be held April 24, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant, Mich.

The session, one of eight scheduled nationally this year, offers multi-level training tracks related to using the resources and ideas of The United Methodist Church's Igniting Ministry media campaign. The campaign includes an effort to place national cable television commercials aimed at increasing awareness of The United Methodist Church and its ministries and inviting people into a relationship with Christ through local churches.

"This training will help more of our churches connect with Igniting Ministry, and equip a greater number of local congregations to effectively share messages of hope, comfort and inspiration in their communities," said the Rev. Larry Hollon, head of United Methodist Communications, which coordinates the campaign and the training sessions.

The Mt. Pleasant event is co-sponsored by United Methodist Communications and the West Michigan Conference Commission on Communication, chaired by Jim Searls.

"We continue to be enthusiastic supporters of Igniting Ministry," Searls said. "We hope the upcoming training event will help congregations sharpen their inviting, welcoming and discipling skills and deepen understanding and commitment to a welcoming lifestyle."

All congregations, from any conference, are welcome. Participants may choose among the tracks and may cover all the sessions or concentrate on exploring newest information and resources, according to Emily Reece, who manages the Igniting Ministry training program.

Congregations are encouraged to send a minimum of three members of their teaching membership team, including the pastor, to the session. Registration fee is $40 for each participating congregation. A lunch will be offered at a cost of $10 per person. Deadline is April 15.

Igniting Ministry is designed to support and encourage local churches to become active partners in reaching out to people beyond the church and creating renewed enthusiasm among church members. More information on the training event and additional components of the effort is available from the Web site www.ignitingministry.org or from the Igniting Ministry offices, toll free at 877-281-6535.
