Hispanic ministries conference coming to Garrett-EvangelicalEVANSTON, ILL. -- Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary will sponsor a Hispanic ministries conference here March 26-27. The bilingual conference for leaders in churches, who are reaching or wanting to reach Hispanic immigrant communities, is sponsored jointly by the seminary and the Office of Connectional Ministries of the Northern Illinois Conference of The United Methodist Church. The conference begins at 3 p.m. on Friday, March 26 with a forum on preparing churches for Latino and immigrant communities. Speaking that afternoon will be Dr. Ted Campbell, president of Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, Bishop C. Joseph Sprague, resident bishop of the Chicago Area and Bishop Joel Martinez, resident bishop of the San Antonio Area. Campbell will speak on "The Relevance and Application of Wesleyan Theology and Practice to the Latino Immigrant Communities." Martinez will speak Friday night on "Liturgical Issues in Welcoming Latino Immigrants," and Sprague will address "Issues on Social Justice Relating to Immigrants" and "The Importance of the Ecumenical Relationships in the United States Regarding Immigrant Issues." Registration is $20 per person and includes lunch, refreshments and a copy of Fiesta Cristiana: Resources for Worship, a book by Martinez. A limited number of overnight accommodations are available.
