Conference grant helps student outreach in Evansville

EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- A South Indiana Conference grant of $2,500 from the conference Board of Higher Education and Campus Ministry has paid off with church-based campus ministries. This money from your conference apportionments has been used to increase a ministry of outreach to the students of the University of Evansville at Methodist Temple United Methodist Church in Evansville.

Here are some of the results of your connectional giving.

  • During school the average attendance of college students at our two worship services has grown from average of 12 students to more than 40 students.

  • A first Sunday of the month meal at the church has been averaging 45 students.

  • An Open Door ministry offering a "home away from home" with an individual or family from Methodist Temple UMC has reached 16 students.

  • An ecumenical welcome picnic organized by Methodist Temple UMC served 250 students.

  • The outreach to foreign students has resulted in one Kenyan student and two Zimbabwean students becoming new members.

  • An African style meal prepared by students from Kenya, Zimbabwe and Niger was held at the church.

  • A Sunday morning gathering for sharing Scripture and Christian topics averages six students weekly.

  • The church provides refreshments at the Thursday evening service at Neu Chapel on campus led by the Rev. Brian Erickson, the new University of Evansville Chaplain.

Methodist Temple UMC thanks the South Indiana Conference Higher Education for its grant to enable these growing ministries to students at UE. This grant is an example of our giving to connectional ministries at work.

For more information about this outreach ministry, contact the Rev. Bob Coleman at rpatc@evansville.net or call the church at 812-476-1306.
