Future missionary organizes youth mission trip to AfricaBy Becky Minglin Tropical, hot and humid describes the climate of Freetown. This coastal town in the small Republic of Sierra Leone on the west coast of Africa will be the early summer destination of six youth and six adults from the Rushville District. Undaunted by the rainy season June brings, they plan to lay block to improve the structure of a school being run by Operation Classroom. Influenced by information gathered at the South Annual Conference session, Cory Gault, a high school senior and member of Brownsville UMC, was the one who conceived the idea of a district youth mission trip to Africa. Wanting youth to be a part of what the UMC is doing in Africa, he has followed through with determination and effort, doing much of the legwork himself. With a minimum number of participants needed, Cory went off to speak in area churches to raise awareness and to encourage other youth to participate in this outreach. "Cory has been a leader in this effort. I believe it has been the power of the prayer that he has put in that is making this all possible," says the Rev. Bill Jackson, Rushville District Youth Coordinator and a participant in the trip. The mission trip is expected to cost approximately $30,000, so fundraising has also been a part of Cory's efforts. By speaking at the Union County Lions Club in November, he was able to contribute $400 to the fund, getting the ball rolling. The group is planning additional fundraisers. Other youth participating will be: Christina Stevens of Brookville UMC; Lydia Montgomery and Justin Rogers, both of Greenwood UMC in Union County; Brooke Jackson of Milroy; and Brian Jackson who attends Greenville College in Illinois. For Cory this mission trip is more than a one-time commitment. Hoping to learn from this experience, he plans to spend part of his life working as a missionary. If you would like more information about this trip or to invite Cory to speak at your church, please contact Rev. Bill Jackson at 765/629-2683. Contributions are being accepted by the Rushville District youth, P. O. Box 427, Rushville, Ind. 46173. Becky Minglin is the SIC youth coordinator. Last updated on January 14, 2004 |
