How important is it for a church to be
beautiful?
Jim Farris

I think it's more important to be
beautiful inside than outside because the church is people, people active in
the community. Beauty on the inside is more important that the outside
structure. |

I'm divided on that question. When we seek
God, we seek beauty because God is beauty. But to stop and think that God is
only in the church is not reality. We can't just seek God in the church; we
need to go outside walls of the church to truly be the body of Christ. |

Each congregation is different. I believe
the beauty of a church is a reflection of its congregation in that each
congregation develops its own style of worshiping our Lord. Our mission is
to make disciples for Jesus Christ. There's the same beauty in worship
experience in a small country church and in a large city cathedral. |

I love beautiful churches, but it's really
people and the mission of the congregation that make a church beautiful.
I've seen some beautiful church buildings, including the National
Cathedral in Washington, D.C., that are awesome. But when you get down
to the calling, it's not where we worship, but how we worship.

I think it's somewhat important, because
that's the first impression a stranger receives of a church - a lot of
little things people often miss consciously. The church building outside
should invite us to come inside. Is the inside drab or bright and inviting?
We like to keep ours sparkling. It helps one feel the love of the
congregation. The size of a church doesn't make any difference, it's the
people. |
