LOWELL AND CLAUDIA WERTZ …

from Johannesburg, South Africa, stated in their Christmas letter that they are leaving Kigoma, Tanzania - a tough decision, after nine years of blessings. However, the work will continue in the hands of trusted African staff with the Wertz' keeping in close contact.

This decision came with the culmination of several factors. Following the incidents of Sept. 11, Lowell thought back to 1991 and their evacuation from the Congo. With the loss of all they had owned, they returned to the US, where they made plans to return to Africa. But a question that was asked at that time, began to haunt him, "How can you risk the lives of your children because you think you have a call from God?" Lowell said he had made a promise then, that he would never knowingly risk the lives of his wife and children.

The ministries of the past nine years were going well, but the more Lowell thought about it, the wiser decision it seemed. "We made a temporary, precautionary pullout from Kigoma to go to South Africa until we could better assess the risks. We packed our bags with no enthusiasm … like many people affected by these difficult times, we must take things one day at a time." Joy in the Harvest, P.O. Box 496; Lansing, IL 60438; wertz@africaonline.co.tz .

JOHN and KENDRA ENRIGHT …

believe the Ecclesiastes scripture, "There is a time to sow and a time to reap" and this is their time to sow in Zambia. On top of all the other buildings and projects they have going, they found a major downtown building complex up for sale and ready to be auctioned. The Enright's borrowed the money from a relative and now the UMC in Zambia owns the former railroad sports club. In December, a congregation of about 100 people met there for the first time.

The center will be used by a church congregation speaking both Bemba and English as a youth center; a facility for discipleship and vocational training and an administrative center for the UMC in Zambia with offices for the conference, the district superintendent, the legal representative and the treasurer. Anyone wanting to contribute to this "bargain basement" center, which costs $4 per sq. ft., may send funds through GBGM to the Kafakumba Pastors School accounts.
