The Five Pillars of Islam

To learn more about Islam:

The UM Board of Global Ministries offers an informative pamphlet, "Our Muslim Neighbors." In addition to basic information about Islam and United Methodist statements related to it, the pamphlet offers a series of class discussion questions and a list of other resources. Order by contacting the Indiana Area Communications: e-mail: Editor ; phone: 317/924-1321

Islam in America, in Indiana:

According to the national Islamic Center, there are 1.3 billion Muslims worldwide, living in every country. In Indiana there are approximately 20 mosques, located in Fort Wayne, South Bend, Michigan City, Gary, Bloomington, West Lafayette, Indianapolis, Terre Haute and Valparaiso.

The U.S. Department of State's Office of International Information reports the following, based on national survey results published earlier this year:

  • There are 1,209 mosques in the U.S., 60 percent established within the last 20 years.

  • Between 17 and 30 percent of American Muslims are converts.

  • Mosques providing some assistance to the needy: nearly 70 percent

  • The typical American mosque is ethnically diverse; 90 percent have some Asian, African-American and Arab members.

A national Islamic Web site's 1999 statistics show there are 5,544 Muslims in Indiana.

The Five Pillars of Islam:

Shahada: Belief in the oneness of God and that Muhammad is his messenger

Salat: Prayer five times daily

Siym: Fasting during Ramadan -- a month-long period of introspection, atonement and re-connecting with God (not unlike our Christian period of Lent)

Zakat: Charity -- considered a "tax due on the wealth of the rich"

Hajj: Pilgrimage to Mecca once in a lifetime -- city where the prophet Mohammed was born
