We occasionally get calls from local
churches asking us to send a reporter and photographer to cover a ribbon
cutting, a presentation or some other important church event. The bad news,
and also the good news, is that we're rarely able to personally comply with
such requests, but rather must opt for other means.
Each edition of the HUM News comes to you with over 100
features and news stories -- more local news and information articles
than any other United Methodist newspaper. So, maybe it's not surprising
that folks get the impression there's a newsroom full of writers and
"shooters" at the ready, here. Our HUM News staff actually
consists of just two news gatherers: Matt Carlisle and me. Matt handles
Indiana News through an established network of freelance writers and
correspondents around the state. I handle Viewpoints, commentaries,
nation/world news. Our third staff team member, Erma Metzler, handles
ads, circulation and district news pages.
The full HUM News Team
"The genius" of our operation (as UMCom's Steve Horswill-Johnson once
termed it) is in the extensive information network we've built in
Indiana. The photos and names on this page represent the people behind
the regular bylines. They are church members who also happen to be
professional writers or district staffers. We depend on them to be the
eyes and ears of HUM to help assure the news is covered throughout one
of the largest episcopal areas in the UMC connection.
As editor I'm keenly proud of the HUM News Team. The
publication to which they contribute their ideas, thoughts and labor has
won national recognition for excellence for each of the last 11 years. I
applaud and continue to be grateful that these good people have chosen
to serve the Church through this communications ministry. |
