Names in the News

Rev. Linda McCoy, pastor of The Garden UMC in Indianapolis, has received the Distinguished Alumni Award presented by Christian Theological Seminary. The award, in the form of a plaque, honors Dr. McCoy for her "unique ministry and for her contributions within the community." Carver McGriff, retired pastor of Indianapolis St. Luke's UMC, nominated her for the award. The Garden is a satellite congregation of St. Luke's UMC and currently fills two Sunday alternative-style worship services for "seekers," held at Beef and Boards Dinner Theatre.

Phil Ford, associate director of the North Indiana Foundation, recently received his doctorate in business management from Thornewood University.
Graysville UMC, a relatively small congregation, worshipping fewer than 50 persons weekly, donated its entire offering on Sept. 16 to United Methodist Committee on Relief for its disaster response. The offering was slightly more than $600, so the congregation went into its mission fund to round the amount up to an even $1,000.

Milestones

Community United Methodist Church in the Columbus District dedicated a new steeple Nov. 4 during worship service. Community was formed 30 years ago when Manchester UMC and Wrights Corner UMC united.

Construction has begun at the future site of Columbia City United Methodist Church. After more than two years of planning, work is moving ahead for the structure on U.S. 30. The new church will replace the old church, located on Jackson Street in downtown Columbia City. The new church will sit on 30 acres.

SCOUTS' ANTIDOTE FOR CABIN FEVER

Hardy members of Venture Crew 699 share a game of cards by lamplight. The group braved January cold for a weekend at Camp Louis Ernst in Dupont, Ind. The winter camp is a and annual event for these Venturers. In addition to sharing recreational activities and fellowship, the group takes time for planning their summer adventure program. This year they've decided to arrange for a backpacking trek at Isle Royale National Park on Lake Superior, probably some time in June.

Venturing is the new co-ed young adult program of the BSA (Boy Scouts of America), started four years ago, Scout Leader Art Collins explains. It's for ages 14 - 20 and "emphasizes high adventure opportunities, youth ministry and personal development. It replaces the old Explorers program which was more career oriented," he says.

Venture Crew 699 is chartered to Tanner Valley UMC, where the Rev. Art Collins is pastor.
