Hoosier United Methodist News

December 2002

See, we're doing a new thing!

"Behold I will do a new thing. Now shall it spring forth; shall you not know it?" Isaiah 43:19

It's uncomfortable, often awkward and sometimes irritating -- changes. In this case the changes will impact the nearly quarter of a million Indiana United Methodist Church members and friends, as well as our hundreds of clergy and staff -- in other words, the entire Indiana Connection. Once we get the "bugs" out of the system and get the procedures working smoothly, these changes will be a good thing. It will cost us far less to disseminate more news, information and inspiration to more people, more often!

Hoosier UM News pew editions:

This "mini-HUM" will be downloadable from the Area office Web site www.inareaumc.org where churches, pastors, secretaries will have the option of two different formats: "newsletter" (8 1/2" X 11") or "bulletin" (5 1/2" X 8 1/2") In addition, for those without access to the Internet, a paper copy of the HUM pew edition will included in the conferences' monthly church mailings. The pew edition will include church news briefs, plus certain event information and also Bishop Woodie W. White's monthly message

The e-HUM:

A twice monthly mailing of news briefs was initiated last March as a free service to subscribers. To date we have approximately 1,300 subscribers. However, both North and South Annual Conferences are in the process of collecting e-mail addresses for each church, which will provide a more comprehensive statewide data base for e-HUM.

e-HUM Alerts:

As needed, the Indiana UMC comprehensive data base will also be used to convey special messages from our bishop as well as timely "alerts." An alert could be a statewide call for help following a crisis (tornadoes, floods), a special, timely notice, or an important announcement. We were made painfully aware of the need for such an "alert" pipeline last year on Sept. 11. Our bishop had no way, then, to send an immediate pastoral message to his Indiana flock. From now on he will!

The e-HUM Online:

This is an expanded version of the news briefs in e-HUM, and with links so that readers are just one click away from full version of a given story. E-HUM Online includes color photos.

NEW!

Hoosier United Methodists TOGETHER:

"HUM Together" will be a quarterly magazine with food for the mind and soul, ideas, analysis and a look at particular trends in the Indiana church - the kind of publication you sit down to savor and, we hope, share with others.

For example, the cover story for the first issue, the Spring edition, will examine what we're doing, or should be doing, as Christian stewards of our environment.

There will also be an up-close-and-personal interview with Sen. Richard Lugar (a United Methodist) on his own faith journey; an exploration of how some local churches' effective grief ministries work; a 'how-to' piece on talking to children about war; local UMs in new and creative missions; "Viewpoints"; a "Merry Heart" page with Bill Schwein's inimitable humor column and the best of church cartoons and anecdotes; as well as a whole lot more.

While we may not have it ready for the first edition, we're also working on compiling a "UM Service Directory." If you're interested in being listed in the directory, e-mail us at: editor@inareaumc.org
