Kids from 'The Basement' create prayer path"The Basement," youth ministry of Hammond Woodmar UMC, spent a week at UM camp Epworth Forest in northern Indiana as a work camp this past summer. They spent $2,000 to create "Aldersgate Grove," a prayer path that runs from the labyrinth to the channel just north of the amphitheater. They cleared trees and brush, moved firewood, cleared trees and brush, spread stones for the path, cleared trees and brush, put together picnic tables and benches, cleared trees and brush, dug post holes for an archway, cleared trees and brush, planted flowers, and cleared trees and brush. Several went home with poison ivy. They did morning devotions, worked eight hours per day, ate in the cafeteria, swam, kayaked and did a program every evening entitled "The nerve to serve," which explored service as a way of life. It was a great opportunity to do mission work, right here at home, do something that the kids were already invested in (their camp!), and help the church and it's ministry all at the same time.
