Help is still available

UMCOR: The UMCOR hotline of 9/27/02 indicated the South Indiana Conference will receive an initial $10,000 grant.

FEMA: President Bush declared about 30 counties a federal disaster. FEMA is setting up an office around west 71st Street, Indianapolis, and I-465

INDIANAPOLIS AREA: 108 homes completely destroyed, plus 1,200 damaged (per Red Cross) UMC Response: Southport UMC has taken a lead role in that area. They have provided meals, shelter and personal items, working with local agencies and Red Cross. Beech Grove UMC, Mt Comfort UMC, Acton UMC have helped people in need.

On the Far Eastside, Franklin Road Baptist Church is the coordination location.

MARTINSVILLE: In Morgan County, 20 homes were destroyed, 18 homes suffered major damage and 50 homes had minor damage. Status: Extensive debris needs to be cleaned up. They are well organized under the direction of Morgan County Department of Emergency Management.

ELLETSVILLE: Sixty to 100 homes were damaged in Monroe County. Status: Most appear to be insured.

MONROE CITY: Ten homes in Knox County were destroyed in one subdivision. Status: Most covered by insurance. UMC Response: Provided a resource person to assess tree damage in subdivision.

POSEYVILLE: Fifteen mobile homes were destroyed. UMC Response: Rev.Tarrell Thompson and Rev. Alvin McFadden of New Harmony have worked with the local people, Red Cross, and Salvation Army to feed victims and helpers. Also, they and other UM members "listened" to the victims stories, providing pastoral care.

Next Suggested Action:

Watch for people slipping through the cracks: no insurance or not qualifying for assistance.

  • Monitor our own people for "burn-out."
  • Listen to the stories of the people.
  • Convene the Disaster Response Committee and the Conference Relief Review Committee as defined by the Disaster Response Plan, dated June 1992.
