Prayer sweeps through the congregation
The Rev. Kent Millard, senior pastor of Indianapolis' St. Luke's UMC,
Indianapolis West District, recently dedicated himself to pray for each family
of his congregation. The events of 2001 led Millard to believe more and more in
the power of prayer and the importance of prayer in the transforming of lives.
Consequently, in March he began praying for each family in the congregation
individually. Each day, Millard prays for 15 families. A letter is sent out to
each individual family prior to their day of prayer asking if they have any
specific prayer concerns. According to Millard, " I love the people of this
congregation and I believe the most important thing I can do to help each person
grow spiritually is to lift them up to God in prayer."

As part of High Street UMC, Muncie District, Children's Sabbath, the children
of the church raised money and awareness for the Heifer International Project.
Their goal was to raise enough money to buy a cow, $500.
The mission of Heifer Project International is to work with communities to
end hunger and poverty by providing needy families with a cow.
On the day of Children's Sabbath, the children wore shirts decorated to look
like cows. As well, a friendly cow wandered the halls of the church distributing
cow eraser, pins and information about the Heifer Project. The Be a Heifer
Helper offering garnered $2,000, enough to purchase four cows. Karen Siefert

Church beats away the winter blues with annual chili cook-off
About 90 people felt their hearts and stomachs "strangely warmed" during the
seventh annual Chili Cook-off at Jackson Heights UMC, Lafayette District.
They dove into the 19 chilies -- 17 were judged -- in the mild, medium, hot,
unusual and children's categories after judges Elaine Todd, Bob Lancaster, Dave
Roebuck and Rep. Brian Kerns, R-7th District, picked the winners.
The Rev. John Niblick, pastor of Jackson Heights and West Point UMCs, said
the event is for fun, but there's always a great turnout as the community
celebrates together in the usually cool winter.
This isn't even a fundraiser, but the community wants to give something for a
chance to chomp chili. This year's donations will go to Operation Classroom.
Makayla Keyes, 6, entered her chili in the children's category. Her mix of
tomatoes, beans, tomato sauce and hamburger took about two hours to make. The
reason she entered: "I wanted people to taste my chili," said Makayla.

groups (three pictured) from the SIC visited Indiana UM Children's Home in
Lebanon. The youth distributed religious music CDs to the boys and girls at the
Home. The outreach project was part of the Youth Annual Conference held Feb.
16-17 in Indianapolis. Eighty youth and adults visited the Children's Home
throughout the afternoon.
