Bishop shares candidly with confirmands

By Matthew Oates

PERU - They came from all nine districts in the North Indiana Conference, some leaving their homes at 5:30 a.m. to come and learn more about the church they were going to join from the bishop himself.

About 265 confirmands made the trip to Peru Main Street UMC for the annual Bishop's Youth Rally. It was a chance to meet other confirmands, grow in faith, share pizza and fellowship with Indiana Area Bishop Woodie W. White.

"(The rally) is real positive thing," said the Rev. Jack Scott, senior pastor at Columbia City UMC and NIC youth coordinator.

The morning started off with music and greetings from Monty Bishop, a musician from Michigan. Then Bishop White spoke to the confirmands, answering any question they had for him about anything they had on their mind. Scott said the questions were broad, ranging from why he wanted to be bishop to the issues gripping the church on homosexuality and abortion and other social issues. "He's very candid with the kids," said Scott. "They're being honest on what they want to know."
