Seeking Shalom: SIC School of Christian MissionBy Pat Helms United Methodist Women, men, youth and children met in Indianapolis wanting to learn more about their neighbors in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos; their responsibility for global health; and to discover some of the courageous women of the Bible. From July 14-18, the SIC School of Christian Mission (SOCM) was held at the University of Indianapolis. This year's theme was "Seeking Shalom." Bishop R. Sheldon Duecker and Chong Cha Maudlin taught a spiritual growth study on Jesus and the Courageous Women. Bishop Duecker's special brand of humor captivated his students. Students learned firsthand much about him and his knowledge of UMW when the bishop participated in a skit performed by the Vincennes District at the variety show. Duecker played a contestant on Hollywood Squares. Chong Cha Maudlin offered the class in Korean. There were three members of the Korean UMC in Bloomington who attended: Unna Pearson, Jung Soon Lim and Hyun K. Kim. Mrs. Kim, who has studied music for many years, also performed two familiar hymns at the variety show using both the Korean and English texts. Her years of training and magnificent voice touched everyone. "Global Heal and Christian Response-Ability" was taught by Laura F. Walker and Dr. George Small. Walker is well known at the South Indiana SOCM. She brought wisdom, many displays and outside resources as she taught her class. Dr. George Small, a local family practice physician, reversed rolls this year. Small has attended SOCM as a student for many years, but this year agreed to be a teacher. He and his wife, Carole, SIC UMW vice president, organized a health fair for Monday evening. There were tests for blood sugar, blood pressure and bone density and many displays. The geographic study "Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos: Land and People" was taught by Nadene Woolf and the Rev. Judith Dunson. Both women brought extensive travel and first-hand experience to their class. Classes for youth were held during the weekday school and their leaders were the Rev. Carol and Byron Fritz. Theses two popular teachers have been part of SOCM for many years. Their students learned something from every class and still had time for a paddle boat trip. The children also enjoyed their classes with teachers Peggy Roedel, Gwen Scott and Karen Korn. Georganna Irish brought her computer and the children learned a great deal from the CD on global health the Women's Division had prepared. Everyone had been asked to bring items for health and hygiene kits to SOCM. The children, as part of their mission, put together almost 100 kits. They even made a trip on the city bus to Wal-Mart, using their own money, bought supplies to supplement what was purchased. On Wednesday, they delivered these kits and about five extra boxes of supplies to Fletcher Place. Last updated on 01/14/2004 |
